He is South Sydney’s prized recruit for 2008, but Craig Wing doesn’t care if he turns dream wrecker for the Rabbitohs in 2007.
The Sydney Roosters veteran signed with the Rabbitohs for next season amid much fanfare earlier this year, his appearance at a press conference prompting questions about his commitment to his current club.
But in a significant showing of his Roosters allegiance, Wing said he is determined to make his last tricolours appearance a memorable occasion, even if it ruins the Rabbitohs’ finals chances.
“I’m not really concerned with how they’re going on the ladder or where they’re going or what they’re doing,” said Wing today.
“My commitment this year has always been to the guys around me and the Roosters and I’ll be doing everything I can this weekend to win.”
South Sydney stand on the cusp of ending an 18-year finals drought this weekend.
Victory over the Roosters guarantees a finals berth – if they lose, the Rabbitohs must rely on either Wests Tigers or Brisbane also losing to stay in the top eight.
But Wing is unfazed by the fact his junior club stand on the brink of a historical finals appearance.
He admits the round 25 clash has “always been in the back of my head”, but is adamant his focus is only on ending his eight-year career at the Roosters in style.
“Next year is next year,” he said.
“I’m sure they’ve all got their own goals this year and they’ve got the finals firmly set in their sights but for me I’m more concerned about my final days with these guys.
“It’s all starting to wind down and is all a bit sad but that’s the way it is.
“I’ve had a really good time here and shared lots of ups and downs and it’s going to be very sad when I walk off the field this Saturday.
“I’d really like to win this weekend and finish on some kind of a high.”
Wing is however confident the Rabbitohs are on the right path to some success in 2007.
“Watching them play yesterday there was not much they could do wrong and not much that they did do wrong on the field,” he said.
“I think they’re going to be very formidable … (but) once you get to the finals it’s a different competition altogether.”
Roosters five-eighth Braith Anasta, also a Souths junior, says the Rabbitohs are the real deal and can shake up this year’s NRL finals series.
“Their defence has been awesome all year and they’re starting to get their attack in order as well,” said Anasta.
“They’re playing some good football and are just about in the semis and the way they’re going they can make a big show of it.
“They’re playing great so there’s no limit to how far they can go.
“If they keep their confidence up and keep playing the way they are they can go as far as they want to go.”
