Efficient wins Melbourne Cup

Prominent businessman Lloyd Williams landed his third Melbourne Cup when Efficient took out Australia’s most famous race at Flemington today.
Did the Melbourne Cup live up to the hype?
Efficient, ridden by Michael Rodd and trained by Graeme Rogerson, came with a strong run in the final 100 metres to down the heavily backed Purple Moon.
Irish-trained Mahler was third.
“I’ve won the Melbourne Cup - I can’t believe it,” Rodd said.
“All credit goes to Lloyd Williams and Graeme Rogerson and their great stable here in Melbourne.”
Williams had previously won the Cup with Just A Dash in 1981 and What A Nuisance in 1985.

Yes it did live up to the hype, very much so.
An unexpected win is always placed in context by an unexpected failure. The common denominator of economists ,
weather forecasters and racing tipsters is this, on the one hand people hope they will be right ,but on the other hand
expect them to be wrong .The economist might claim there is no inflation, even though a meat pie that three years
back cost $1.80 ,can now cost $4. The weather forecaster predicts a dry week ahead but grandma points out the
ants at home are franticly climbing the walls The racing tipster cannot within reason find anything else in the feild
able to to beat his selection , ignoring he is writing about a horse. The curse of assumption out flanks all punters.
Yesterday as always was splendid. All over Australia people had fun. The weather forecaster got it right. The race
tipsters got it wrong, Master O’Reilly would win , Effecient couldn’t. The only tip I received came from an economist,
a certainty in fact, Interest Rate Rise (out of Necessity by Inflation) in the RBA Stakes But it didnt start untill today.

Absolutely, another brilliant piece of sporting theatre. Michael Rodd’s ride reminded me of Jim Cassidy on KIWI in the 1983 Cup. Whatever was done to get Efficient to return to his old 2006 form should be bottled and prayerful thanks given.

What was good about Efficient’s win, is that another quality horse won the Melbourne Cup.
