There must a foot-in-mouth gene which both David Campese and Shane Warne share. Both have been champions in their sport and retired at the top of their games, attaining international legendary status on the way.

Others such as John Eales and Steve Waugh, who have also recently retired, have departed with grace and dignity – thereby enhancing their legend. While in the past we have had to listen to rantings of Campese, not even he stooped to calling his coach a “goose” and suffering from “verbal diarrhoea” as Warne has served to John Buchanan.

Andrew Logan, of The Roar, recently wrote an excellent article on the lack of dignity in sport. What is it with these super egos that they feel compelled to publicly strut their undignified and insulting opinions?

Many of us agree that we need a higher level of dignified behaviour from our sports heros, especially in their off the field behaviour. What sort of example is provided when a legend such as Warne conducts public humiliation of his former coach?
