North Melbourne chief executive Eugene Arocca is hopeful the AFL can broker better financial deals for clubs in legal action against Telstra Dome management.

Swans again expecting to soar in 2009

by James Dampney - December 22nd 2008 @ 7:25am

Sydney have been having another typically quiet AFL off-season, but the Swans are confident they are heading for another strong year on the field.
Many expected the Swans to struggle to have an impact last season, but the 2005 premiers responded with a sixth-placed finish on the ladder and a first-round elimination final victory over the [...]

Richmond redeem AFL’s appalling handling of the Cousins case

by The Crowd - December 17th 2008 @ 2:19am

It’s been fascinating watching the Ben Cousin story from a distance, a consequence of living in London for the past six months. The amount of times I’ve read headlines that declare the ex-Eagle will receive a second chance has been matched only by the number of headlines that declare the opposite.
The news that he has [...]

Why the Gold Coast is so attractive to the sporting codes

by Pippinu - December 15th 2008 @ 7:20am

With the sporting diet of the residents of the Gold Coast about to become more varied in the next few years, I thought I’d provide a quick summary of why all the football codes are attracted to this part of the world.

by The Crowd - December 5th 2008 @ 1:56am

An article in Thursday’s Fairfax press reported of WADA again modifying their anti-doping protocol.
Amongst the amendments is this key section are:

A world AFL team?

by The Crowd - December 1st 2008 @ 7:50am

With football increasing, or argumentatively starting, its presence on the international stage, and with the AFL looking to grow the game off Australia’s shores, is a team representing the rest of the world the way to go?
A team consisting of at least 50% non-Australians could be a possibility in 20 years time. Such a [...]

by Guy Hand - December 1st 2008 @ 7:29am

The coaches of the AFL’s top three draft picks have refused to put pressure on their new recruits to play in 2009, despite their clubs’ desperate need for the trio to be up and running as soon as possible.
Melbourne took key forward Jack Watts with the No.1 selection in Saturday’s national draft - coach Dean [...]

Watts best for us, says Demons

by Guy Hand - November 30th 2008 @ 6:54am

Finding a long-term replacement for retiring legend David Neitz sealed Melbourne’s decision to make key forward Jack Watts the No.1 pick at this year’s AFL national draft.
Watts, 17, is set to become the foundation of the Demons’ attempt to rebuild the club from the wreckage of a dismal wooden spoon year.
He was one of three [...]

Ben Cousins: Clubs say no

by AAP - November 30th 2008 @ 6:51am

The closest Ben Cousins came to the 2008 AFL national draft was his photo on a large banner hanging from the wall, recalling past glories.
Capping a grim week for the 2005 Brownlow Medallist and confessed drug addict, no club called his name in Saturday’s draft at Telstra Dome.
The Brisbane Lions had been the last to [...]

Tigers confident Hislop can succeed at Punt Rd

by Roger Vaughan - November 30th 2008 @ 5:50am

Tom Hislop would want to make the most of this AFL second chance. The 20-year-old former Essendon midfielder was the first delisted player named on Saturday in the national draft.
He had to wait until pick 58 before Richmond called his name and he was among just four recycled players to find a second club.
Those numbers [...]
