Wallabies No.8 Wycliff Palu has re-signed with NSW and the Australian Rugby Union until the end of 2010 in another boost for a resurgent Waratahs side aiming for Super 14 glory this season.

Palu joins five-eighth Kurtley Beale and fullback Lachie Turner in committing their futures to the Waratahs, who opened the season with an encouraging 20-3 home victory over the Hurricanes on Saturday.

Named man-of-the-match in the win over the ‘Canes, Palu believes the Waratahs are building “something special” and spurned bigger offers from Europe to remain in Sydney.

He hopes his decision to re-sign will prompt flanker and reigning NSW player of the year Rocky Elsom to also stay with the Tahs.

“Hopefully. I think the pack played really well on Saturday night and think we’ve got something special here,” Palu said prior to training at the Sydney Football Stadium.

“If (Elsom) stays it’ll be a bonus for us.

“The team’s looking good and we’ve just got to keep building and better things will come at the end of the year.”

Palu has trimmed down this season and has become an 80-minute player, having been more of an impact player early in his career.

The 25-year-old, who has 17 Test caps to go with 33 appearances for his state, believes he is still a work-in-progress who “sometimes gets lost” in mauls and at the breakdown.

But coach Ewen McKenzie feels the hulking No.8 is being modest.

“I think he’s talking it up a little bit there,” McKenzie said.

“I think he’s a cunning player now and some subtleties are coming into his game.

“He’s an attack and defence player. It’s just a good news story.”

The ARU are thrilled Palu decided to stay in Australia and the No.8 now wants to focus on helping the Waratahs, starting with Saturday’s clash against the Chiefs in Hamilton.

“It’s good to get it out of the way, now I can just concentrate on playing well for the Tahs,” he said.

“I’m happy with the deal. You weigh things up and I had a talk with my family and at the moment I think I’m still learning the game and I want to play well here.

“There were a few offers from Europe, but it’s too cold over there.

“I thought I’d just stay here.”
