Burgoyne stars as Port cruise home against Magpies

Collingwood assistant coach Brad Scott says the Magpies are unfazed by their scratchy pre-season form after Port Adelaide handed them their third-straight sizeable loss in an AFL practice match at Princes Park today.

Led by a superb performance by midfield gun Shaun Burgoyne, who dominated in the centre and kicked five goals, the Power notched their first win of the year, 15.11 (101) to 9.12 (66).

With Port fielding easily their strongest side of the pre-season, their superior skill level won out.

Along with Burgoyne, zippy running player Danyle Pearce stood out, while Chad and Kane Cornes were productive and half-forwards Ebert and Daniel Motlop were handy with two goals each.

Coach Mark Williams was also happy with Robbie Gray, who kicked two goals in his first match of the year, and regular tall forward Damon White, who played in defence.

The Magpies also fielded a side not far off their best, but were shoddy with their kicking both around the ground and in front of goal.

They have now lost by 81 points to Adelaide in Abu Dhabi, 33 points to West Coast in Albany and today it was a 35-point defeat by the Power.

Scott said while the skills today were disappointing, the continued ordinary form was of little consequence at this stage.

“We just need to get some game time into the players and take another step forward, I suppose if you’re using racing parlance, we’re better for the run,” Scott said.

“Obviously you’d probably like to win all of them, but I’m sure you guys couldn’t remember our round one NAB Cup game last year, I had to look it up myself, we played the Kangaroos and got killed.

“Those results have very little influence on what happens in the season proper.”

One positive for the Magpies was the performance of youngster Chris Egan, who missed much of last season with a knee injury, but won plenty of the ball in the midfield and up forward today.

“He’s someone who we’re looking for big things from this year,” Scott said.

“He’s a very talented player, but for too long he’s promised a lot and probably hasn’t delivered what he’d like to.”

Defenders Chris Dawes, who kept Warren Tredrea fairly quiet, and Harry O’Brien, who was one of his team’s best, also pleased Scott.

With James Clement having retired, Simon Prestigiacomo still affected by a foot injury which interrupted his 2007 season and Shane Wakelin nearing the end of his career, the club wants new key defenders to step up.

Both sides will field sides near full-strength for their final practice matches next weekend.

Williams said the Power’s pre-season was gradually gathering momentum.

“We’d like to think that we can build again next week and be better than what we were this week,” he said.

“Lade and (Chad) Cornes and Peter Burgoyne have really only played a half or none at all so far this year, so it was important for them.”
