Australian midfielder Tim Cahill today apologised for any offence caused by his controversial goal celebration in Everton’s 3-1 Premier League win over Portsmouth at the weekend.
Cahill marked scoring his first goal since his older brother, Sean Cahill, was jailed for six years in January over an assault which left a man partially blind by putting his wrists together as though they were handcuffed.
“It was not intended to cause any offence to any other party and I wholeheartedly apologise if any offence was caused,” Tim Cahill said in a statement.
Asked about his unusual gesture after the match, the Socceroos star said: “Basically it’s for me older brother.
“Everyone knows my situation. I’m just proud that he’s happy and I’m happy and I’m thinking of him always.”
Sean Cahill was found guilty in November last year of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Christopher Stapley outside a south London nightclub in 2004.
He was extradited to England from Australia after breaching bail.
