Beijing bid back on track for Vukovic

Danny Vukovic could be back training with the Olyroos as early as next week after being given the green light to resume his bid for Beijing.
While he won’t be eligible to play until after July 28, the Central Coast goalkeeper is likely to rejoin the Australian under-23 squad for an eight-day camp in Townsville from Thursday after having his nine-month ban for striking a referee amended so he can take part in the Beijing Olympics.
Vukovic, currently holidaying on Hamilton Island, will begin pre-season training with the Mariners on Monday where he will sit down with club bosses to devise the best course of action to make his re-born Olympic dream a reality.
“We certainly will sit down with Danny and just try to work out the best plan,” Mariners executive chairman Lyall Gorman said today.
“We’re just trying to get confirmation on whether he can train in the Olyroo camps … and that certainly will be the preferred option.
“The longer he is with the (Olyroos) coaching staff and the boys, the better.
“We’ve also got the option to keep him in with us, or send him over to Sheffield United, who we have an alliance with, for two-three weeks for an intensive program over in England.”
Vukovic has been keeping fit while awaiting his Olympic fate the past two months, but had just begun a holiday in North Queensland when Football Federation Australia’s independent appeals committee ruled him available for the Olympics on Wednesday night.
The appeals committee cut Vukovic’s sentence for striking referee Mark Shield in the A-League final by four months while splitting the suspension in two – until June 28 and then from August 29 to October 5.
It means the 23-year-old will miss the Olyroos’ warm-up tournament in Malaysia next month as well as several other friendlies, but will be available to play in Australia’s first Olympic match against Serbia in Shanghai on August 7 if selected.
Vukovic played in all 14 Olympic qualifiers for Australia.
But he may yet have a challenge to re-claim his spot with Perth Glory `keeper Tando Velaphi impressing in the Olyroos’ 1-1 draw with Mexico last month.
Reading’s Adam Federici and Liverpool signing Dean Bouzanis have also been mentioned in recent weeks as options for Beijing.
“It doesn’t guarantee automatic selection just because he’s available, he lost lots of yards in the last couple of months with his absence and will lose some more yards in the next couple of months,” Gorman said.
“I spoke to him today, and he was probably a bit more emotionally settled than last night.
“I think last night was a night of relief, today there is a bit more fierce determination back with Danny.
“He just wants to get back on the training field as soon as he can and re-establish himself in the eyes of the Olyroos selectors and (coach) Graham Arnold.”
Gorman said he didn’t know whether the controversial decision to split the ban was setting a dangerous precedent.
“I don’t know the answer to that … but full credit to the tribunal that they’ve been able to see that the penalty is carried out in the A-League where the action occurred.
“There’s a serious sanction here for a serious offence.
“But whether there’s a precedent being set or not, I think the panel have shown incredible lateral thinking to make sure that there’s a penalty that meets the crime, but also one that doesn’t exceed the crime.”
