Olyroos captain Mark Milligan was on his way back to Australia tonight after missing a training camp to talk with European clubs.
Milligan’s manager, Tom Brookes, said Olympic team coaching staff had been aware of his client’s whereabouts over the past two to three weeks and knew he would not be at the camp in Townsville today.
“Mark was scheduled to be at a pre-tour training camp this week but due to the circumstances wasn’t able to attend and they have been aware of that,” Brookes told AAP.
Brookes, who divides his time between Sydney and London, was also heading back to Australia tonight.
He said he would find out from Football Federation Australia (FFA) when he arrived whether Milligan faced any sanctions for missing the camp ahead of a pre-Olympic tournament in Malaysia starting on May 11.
“They have a tour to Malaysia which Mark intends to be part of at the end of next week,” Brookes said.
“We’re in discussions with the FFA at the moment as to where we go from here.
“We’ve had dialogue with the coaching staff but we’ve requested the FFA to look into the situation when we get back.”
Another Olyroo, Stuart Musialik, was dropped from the squad for a trip to the US when he failed to attend training the day after the A-League grand final in March this year.
The FFA confirmed Milligan’s no-show but said they were waiting for him to make contact.
The defender is off-contract with A-League side Sydney FC and has been linked with a possible move to Arsenal.
The English Premier league giants refused to comment and Brookes declined to say which clubs Milligan had been speaking to.
“All I can say is that Mark has had interest from several clubs in Europe,” he said.
“We’re in a situation where we’re just trying to establish which of those interested clubs are able to put forward a package that is acceptable to the player.
“Mark wants this sorted as soon as possible because he’s got the Olympics this year and he wants to focus on those without a decision like this hanging over him.”
Milligan, 22, played a key part in the Olyroos’ qualification for the Beijing Games in August.
