Michael Crocker: riding one of rugby league’s great winning streaks

Melbourne forward Michael Crocker is currently riding one of rugby league’s great winning streaks, having not played on a losing side in his last 33 games.

Crocker may be rugby league’s “Mr Lucky” but his great passion, State of Origin, has not been kind to him.

His incredible run started with the Roosters with two wins at the back end of 2005 before switching to the Storm.

Crocker has walked off a winner with Melbourne – including last year’s grand final – 29 successive times since and also been involved in two Test victories with Australia.

While he’s won grand finals and Test matches, his magic touch is yet to extend to State of Origin glory, something he desperately wants to correct this year.

“Being a passionate Queenslander it’s definitely something I’d like to achieve,” said Crocker, a member of losing Queensland teams in 2003-05.

“Origin has been a bit disappointing for me in that I’ve never won a series.

“I’ve lost grand finals (2006 to Brisbane) and I can tell you losing an Origin series is just as bad.

“It’s definitely something I’d like to do before I finish playing.”

Queensland winger Israel Folau was rested from training today after developing a high temperature overnight and being isolated from his teammates.

However Queensland team doctor Roy Saunders said reports that Folau’s temperature spiked in the 40s were incorrect.

“What he’s had is a viral illness,” said Dr Saunders.

“He’s had a temperature in the high 38s and been unwell for the last 24 hours.

“He’s on the road to recovery now. At this point he’s 80 per cent fit and I didn’t want to push the issue today.”

Crocker, who has watched Queensland win back-to-back Origin series from the sidelines, said it was great to be back in camp at a time of the year when everyone wanted to be playing.

NSW have named a bigger pack with the aim of engaging Queensland in a battle up the middle but Crocker says Queensland can use that tactic to their advantage.

“They’ve got a big mobile pack but I think we’ve got a great defensive pack which I think can combat them,” he said.

“It’ll be the forward clash fans want to see and the game will be won or lost in the ruck.”

Queensland ran an opposed session against the Titans Under 20 side at Skilled Park today which feature a lot of communication between players.

“This is our last hit out against opposition and we’re just trying to get things right with K (Karmichael Hunt) and (Johnathan) Thurston and Billy (Slater),” said centre Justin Hodges.

“Karmichael is one of those fearless players who who hits the line hard and he’s going to take a lot of pressure off guys like me because you know the Blues are going to be worried about him.”

Injured Queensland captain Darren Lockyer joined the Maroons camp today to tutor Hunt who will have the toughest assignment on Wednesday night following his selection ahead of Titans’ halfback Scott Prince at five-eighth.

“It’s going to be good for us to have Locky there and hopefully he can pass some tips onto Karmichael and help him out as much as possible,” said Hodges.
