Nothing fazes the Firebirds, says coach

Queensland coach Vicki Wilson says her surging side is “quite nonchalant” about their stunning success and declares nothing will faze the Firebirds in the run to the trans-Tasman netball competition finals.

With the ladder-leading Magic having the bye this week, second-placed Queensland can go top on percentage with a home win over Adelaide.

Victory would give the Firebirds a hat-trick of wins over their main Australian rivals, NSW, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Conversely the fifth-placed Thunderbirds, who have lost to the Vixens and Swifts in successive weeks, will be looking to avoid their own hat-trick and a win could lift them into fourth on percentage above NSW who have a bye.

Wilson was adamant the escalating hype surrounding her team’s deeds was not distracting her players.

“No, the girls are quite nonchalant about everything and they just go about their business as usual,” Wilson said.

“They know we’ve got a long to go, they are just very pleased with the way they are playing and they are still working extremely hard.”

Following this week’s match the Firebirds face a potential top-of-the-table clash with the Magic in Rotorua and other testing games away to the Swifts, at home to Tactix, a return with the Thunderbirds in Adelaide and a final round trip to Dunedin against the Steel.

“We’ve got quite a hard run home, but we’re prepared for it, nothing is going to faze us, we know what to expect,” Wilson said.

Adelaide coach Jane Woodlands was hoping her team could finally string together four quarters after tailing off against the Swifts.

“The big thing for us is to put a whole game together, 50 per cent of our games we started really well and haven’t finished off at all well,” Woodlands said.

“The other half, we’ve not broken away until halftime and then steamrolled teams in the second half. It would be nice to see the first half backed up with the second half.”

Woodlands hinted she could retain Kate Beveridge ahead of Test shooter Kristen Hughes, after the West Australian recruit shone against NSW last week.

The Australian derby of round nine brings together joint third-placed Melbourne Vixens and the second from last Fever at the State Netball Hockey Centre on Sunday.

Fever, who are coming off the bye, will be looking to snap a four-match losing streak.

They will start the long-odds underdog against a Vixens side smarting from their loss last week to Queensland.

The Melbourne fixture represents a return home for Fever midcourt veteran Ingrid Dick, who along with current Vixens star Sharelle McMahon played in the five Phoenix title-winning teams in the old Commonwealth Bank Trophy.

“Hopefully she (McMahon) passes it to me,” joked Dick.

The round starts in Invercargill tomorrow when the Steel look for their first home victory against a Pulse side searching for their first win anywhere.

The other all-Kiwi clash brings together the Tactix and Mystics in Auckland on Monday evening.
