I know what it’s like. You log onto The Roar, settle down to soak up a good skinful of rugby-related chat, fact and bluster, and just as you get into it, the phone rings, or the boss calls in, or your wife lays dinner on the table.
Watch the first video in this new weekly series
Or the bins need to go out, or the dog needs to go to the vet. Whatever the reason, the outcome is the same – you miss the stuff you need to know.
Stillmissit’s comment on the U20 World Champs? Sorry, didn’t catch that one. Spiro’s stats? Nah must have been at kids soccer that day. Sheek’s ideas on Robbie Deans? They’ll have to wait.
So, we’ve put together a snapshot of the rugby week in our new Roar Rugby Review program, which you can watch in 10 minutes or so, right from the site – the idea being that regardless of whether you just want to top off your Roar experience, or whether you just need to grab a quick snapshot of all that’s going on in rugby, you can get it here.
Who’s on it? Well, you’ve probably seen me on the Roar as a columnist. Mat Collett is a rugby-nut mate of mine who reckoned he’d love to have a go at being on TV talking about rugby, so I said “I’ve got just the thing”.
We’re just like you. People with an interest in the game who reckon we know more than the bloke next to us. We were talking over a beer a few months back, and thought that this would be just the thing for the Roar – another way for you guys to get your opinions aired to those who matter – other rugby fans.
So one thing led to another, and here we are, in full living colour, right in your loungeroom, or office, or internet café.
In doing this though, we didn’t want you to have to sit through a sort of Inside-Rugby-lite or a try-hard Fox Sports News. What we’re trying to do is to give the Roar contributors (that’s you) another avenue to air their thoughts – and we’ve alluded to a couple of your comments on this weeks episode.
We’ll expand on the show in coming weeks to include some special guests, some interviews with people mentioned on the Roar and as much as possible, the comments made by you on various articles. What that means is that the more you contribute the better chance you have of having your ideas aired to thousands of rugby fans across the globe.
There’s space for you to comment below the video, just like you would with an article – so don’t hold back. We’re not precious.
Let us know what you’d like to see us do differently, things we might have got wrong, or right, and most importantly, people you’d like to see us talk to. We’ll do our best to go out there, find them, talk to them, and ask them your questions – all you need to do is shoot your requests in on the comments form.
Also, now that our fillum editors know what we want and how the end product should look, they’ll be turning the show round in a day or so – so future editions will be right up to date with all the latest rugby views, opinions and guests that you’ve asked for.
All the episodes will be archived on The Roar.
We’ll look forward to seeing you each week.

Nice first up effort guys, pity you weren’t as current with the rugby news and events for the week as you must have recorded this before the results of the latest NZ and SA tests as well as the results of the U20 World Cup.
Australia are in a difficult situation with the absence of so many test regulars in the French side, if they win convincingly then critics will argue that it was as expected against a weakened French side, another scratchy performance or even worse a loss and the doomsayers will predict an expected bath in the forthcoming Tri Nations series. None of the warmup tests against NH teams can be an accurate gauge of the strengths and weaknesses of SA, NZ and Australia and we won’t learn anything further until they play each other.
Great to hear extracts from the various posts by regular contributors like Stillmissit and Monty Stringfellow and look forward to watching future episodes and special guests. Are there any plans to feature similar video presentations for the other sports that are featured on the Roar and maybe an Olympics special?
A great innovative addition to the premier online talkback site in Australia. Only negative is that I was unable to launch the fullscreen option in the playback

Hi Sam,
Thanks for your tolerance of our first up effort. You’re dead right on the timing – we filmed this last Tuesday due to time issues with the editor, which meant some content issues…eg that Mat had to have a guess on the teams in the final of the U20′s, and unfortunately got it wrong….Murphy’s Law (although he is a pretty poor judge….dunno why we got him along in the first place. You out there Matty…??).
In future, it will be filmed on a Monday and will go to air that night, so it will be much more current.
We’ll continue to examine contributors comments, and also try to break it up with a couple of interviews etc. Any ideas you might have….keep ‘em coming. Also particularly let us know if there is anyone you’d like to see us interview or talk to – we’ll organise it. Current players…past players….refs…administrators…we’ll get them for you if at all possible.
Re. other sports….Steve Kaless doesn’t know it yet, but he is in line to do a league version at some stage. The Olympics idea is a great one….I’ll take it to The All-Knowing, All-seeing Webmaster and see what he reckons.
Cheers…

Well done on your first effort chaps.
The ‘set’ had me wondering if I was tuned into Rugby Heaven. Angels wings would have completed it all nicely.
Seriously though, I enjoyed seeing it and hearing what your thoughts are on the state of Rugby.
Keep up the good work.

Zac
the show streamed ok for me. The iTunes link worked ok but you might want to look at your compression & quality as Episode One is a 86mb file for 10 minutes while say a clip from Tedtalks is 68mb for 21 minutes. As a talking head show, I am sure you do not need that high quality of video. Download speed and currency seems to what wins in this new media.
Also with regards to contributors, it would be great to get a diversity of opinion for example balance a Sydneyj ournalist with a guy from Brisbane.
For Spiro: Is Evan Whitton still alive? Still writing on rugby?
Hope this helps.

Yeah Andrew, I thought the guy sitting next to you looked familiar.

keep on innovating guys. its all good! download could be faster so that there is no pause. Alternatively, allow the file to down load while on pause. then you can build a buffer between what you are watching and what is being downloaded.

Super stuff fellas – my only worry is that you’re going to be poached by Ch10 or Foxtel! It’s terrific to see a decent rugby show on air again. Matt, a bit of help with pronouncing Imanol Harinordoquy’s name – during all of the World Cup I thought his real name was “Harry No-dicky”… rather cute really, and very memorable when it comes to pronouncing it.
