Bloody good article, Inky. A number of my mates and I have always regarded the Cullen try in Wellington in 2000 as the pinnacle moment of Wayne Smith's coaching career and we've always wondered why we don't see moves like that more ofter. I guess because they're incredibly hard to pull off. I'm looking forward to a few more in the TriNations with the extra space available from scrums under ELVs.

Matt - The argument is further flawed by the fact that the Australian U-20 lineup that lost to England had more S14 players in it than the NZ side in the final.

One of the better 'gather round children' tales I've heard in a while...

The arguement over SH stars blocking NH youngsters is still a little hard to justify. NZ had 4 Super14 players.

That aside, there were nearly as many GP squad players as there were Air NZ Cup players. And most of those guys who have had a run in the ANZC only got a game or two.

They would be:

- S14 -

K.Poki (Crusaders)
S.Maitland (Crusaders)
N.Manu (Crusaders)
Z.Guildford (Hurricanes)

- AirNZ Cup -

C.Smith (North Harbour)
G.Hart (Auckland)
D.Kirkpatrick (Wellington)
J.Willison (Waikato)
A.Taylor (Manawatu)
T.Renata (Waikato)

The thing is though Inky, there are so many great talents floating around in this age group in NZ. Keep and eye out for another couple of future stars in Aaron Cruden and Kurt Baker (who will play for Manawatu in the AirNZCup this year). There is so much talent in this comp it'll be a real shame if they get rid of it.

Carters try was more an indication of how poor the English midfield defence was than any genius strike move created by Wayne Smith no matter how romantically you want to dress it up. That wouldn't happen at club level in most countries around the world.
