A sprint to the finish involving six riders was what it all came down to in the grueling 221.6 km Men’s Road Race.

By the barest of margins, Spaniard Samuel Sanchez held off renowned sprinter, Davide Rebellin, and the fast finishing Swiss, Fabian Cancellara.

Australian Michael Rogers finished a highly commendable 6th place, only a few bike lengths off a medal.

The race took longer than intended due to the humidity, which took its toll on many riders as the race progressed.

Tour de France runner-up Cadel Evans shrugged off any injury concerns, finishing in the second group not far behind the lead pack.

Sanchez, who was the least likely Spaniard to take the honours, received great support from Alejandro Valverde and especially Carlos Sastre, who kept the Spanish riders in contact with the lead group during the middle stages.

Although not achieving a medal, Australia will go into the time trials full of confidence, with both Rogers and Evans expected to challenge for some silverware.

With not even one day completed of an action packed Olympic campaign, the excitement factor has already been felt by many Australians with impressive results in volleyball, eventing team dressage, rowing and now cycling.

Signs are looking good for those donning the green and gold. Let’s hope it continues.
