Tahu ready, as Elsom decision delayed
Wallabies coach Robbie Deans has declared former NRL star Timana Tahu ready to start his first rugby Test. Deans has confirmed Tahu will be considered as the replacement for injured centre Berrick Barnes in Australia’s clash with the Springboks in Johannesburg this Saturday.
While Deans has to wait another day to find out whether he’ll be without flanker Rocky Elsom - who faced a judicial hearing for dangerous play today only for the result to be held over - he’s already making his feelings known about a possible replacement for Barnes.
The coach has several possible midfield combinations to choose from, one of which would include the fast-tracking of former Kangaroo Tahu into the Wallabies’ No.12 jersey.
“There’s no doubt he can start a Test, he’s perfectly capable of that,” Deans told reporters.
After playing just three minutes off the bench in his Test debut a month ago, Tahu got the final 20 minutes at inside centre in Durban after Ryan Cross had originally replaced Barnes from the 20th minute of the game.
At that point, outside centre Stirling Mortlock moved in one position with Cross playing at No.13.
“It was great for Timana to get the time that he got,” Deans said.
“We delayed his entry obviously and deferred to the blokes who had the background of Test rugby first with the initial replacement option.
“But when Timana got in the game … my first instinct was that he did really well having watched it live.
“We’ll have a look at the footage and pour over it and contemplate our combinations and what we believe will work for us.”
Australia are insisting back-to-back wins in the Republic for the first time in 45 years is their priority, but Saturday’s Ellis Park Test will have no bearing on the outcome of the Tri-Nations series so the Wallabies would have nothing to lose by experimenting with Tahu.
Cross, another former league star, also performed well on Saturday and has put his hand up for a promotion from the bench.
“I think I’ve taken my opportunities this year so hopefully if I get a spot we can make it another good win,” he told reporters.
“I see myself as a 13 but obviously Stirling’s captain and also had a great game yesterday, but I could slot in at 12 or any other place in the backline.
“We can swap any time, I can go 12, he can go 13, we’re both big centres and get over the advantage line and I think that’s a bonus for us.”
Meanwhile, Deans will wait anxiously for a decision on Elsom who was citied after pulling Springboks jumper Victor Matfield down in a lineout.
Elsom won the man-of-the-match award on Saturday and his availability would be a massive boost for the Wallabies, who have lost lineout chief Dan Vickerman with a shoulder injury.
There was also no decision on South African prop CJ van der Linde’s citing for a headbutt on Wallabies halfback Sam Cordingley.
Reinforcement Nathan Sharpe, whose partner is due to give birth soon after the Jo’burg match, will join his team-mates at their base north of Durban later today, while Barnes and Vickerman have headed home for treatment on their injuries and lock Hugh McMeniman is still recovering from a bout of food poisoning.

I missed the game so I don’t know if Tahu played well.
What do others think?

He was solid - didn’t make any mistakes, got a couple of good offloads away also one nice handoff to pinch a few extra metres. The game didn’t really come his way, but that can often happen with substitutes when they’ve only got 15 or 20 minutes to impose themselves on the play.

There was also one instance when he was found out on defence. The Springboks were breaking out of their 22, and he got beaten when the Wallers defence was scrambling. I suspect Robbie will start him though, not a lot to lose in this game, and will want to get his game time up. Also lets Mortlock stay at 13 where he is a star.

Great opportunity to start Timana Tahu this week. It would just add another question of the Springboks game plan. Tahu’s been in excellent form and given the start would prove to be huge handful for the Springboks… After 20 minutes on the field he will have settled in and be on fire… There is only one other current international 12 I can think of which has the abilities of Tahu and that’s the impressive Springboks 12, Jean De Villiers.
Wouldn’t it be great to see them play opposite each other in Johannesburg.

when Mortlock retires, Tahu 12 and ss 13. Great combination

that is suposed to read “Cross” above. Sorry!

Gavin yes it will be a great combination.
However Cross has a long way to go to be the world’s best 13 which Mortlock has reached at various times in his career, including right now.
It will be sad to see SM retire, been a great and inspirational player for us.
The team will be weakened unless of course he hangs on too long which I doubt he will.

Adam Ashley Cooper at 13 would be my choice…

mudskipper I do think AC would be a better 13 than Cross. The trouble is he is easily our best F/B.
Shepherd and Huxley when back from injury are not anywhere as good at F/B.

After Stirling Mortlock’s retirement of cause….. Excellent Captain, the guys really respect him…

Peter K… I know, I don’t really rate Shepherd as an international fullback, and I definitely think AAC is a better F/B. Drew Mitchell’s game growing and kicking has improved; he had a good game last week.
ACC should be back this weekend at F/B. However in a year or so depending on Mortlock I think we will see the ACC’s best position will be13 for the Wallabies. He has the same issue at the Brumbies as he is playing along side Mortlock…
I always thought that Mark Gerrard would have made a good 12, but he really never got the chance and ended being labelled a utility player which can be the kiss of death in the long term. Jack of all, master of none… syndrome…
I don’t rate Cross as a player he gets better every season in rugby…Like all good players he seldom makes mistakes, a sound player…

Sorry…I meant I do rate Ryan Cross, my apologies…he gets better every season and is sound…

Mortlock going may not be for 2 to 3 years time.
Someone like Horne might keep developing in that time. He is faster than Turner, Hynes etc. There is also O’Connor from WA.
Things change quickly. I remember everyone touting Henjak as Gregans replacement, look what happened.
So it may not be either Cross or AC or Tahu (he also likes 13) who replace Mortlock.

I love the no nonsense, no bs, no excuses attitude of Deans.
It contrasts so much with other coaches current and previous.
Deans has his feet on the ground, and does not go OTT when we win.
When we lose no excuses, look at loss against AB’s.
This quote towards playing at altitude epitomises the man.
“You breathe a bit harder and a bit earlier, but you breathe hard in every game,” Deans said.
“It’s the same for both teams.”

I love it!

Peter K…yep…there are a few guys like Horne about. We will know in time if they’re able to compete at the international level…Horne likely needs 2-3 years to develop. He could be apart of the next RWC. Players like Alfi Malfi, Afusipa Taumoepeau, Leo Afeaki and Peter Betham also will have their time…and these are just the Brumbies young guns…I’m sure there are plenty more…

Yeah give him a crack. Cooper wont be right just yet. Tahu will do well. Hes a good defender and can off load.

Adam Ashley Cooper may be back, so Mitcell on Bench or ACC on bench…Lachie might not get a run…

Elsom got one week for a minor ofence, I hope they appeal.
It seems anyone cited gets suspended.
The bright side is that Elsom will be rested for the vital Brisbane game.

Peter K - I share your admiration of Robbie Deans.
You just know he’s not going to put his foot in his mouth & embarrass the Wallabies.
He’s one of those rare blokes that when he speaks, even softly, people actually listen and think about what they heard.

That’s a big loss - to have VIcks and Elsom out. Our two best and hardest forwards. And Horwill looking tired and sore after his first big international season. I was getting my hopes up at the start of the week re a second win - not so sure now. Sharpe and McMeniman at 5 and 6 is a fair step down from Vicks and Elsom.

Timana Tahu spent 10 years with much harder blokes than the Boks trying to bash him every game. Might count for something with the selectors this weekend given the Bok penchant for violence. Then again so did Cross.
