Tigers players put on notice, says Hodgson

Brett Hodgson says Wests Tigers players have been officially put on notice by coach Tim Sheens’ forecast of an off-season player cleanout at the NRL club.

Sheens sensationally vowed heads would roll after Saturday’s 48-16 loss to Manly left the join-venture club facing a third straight NRL season without finals football.

While Tigers skipper Hodgson’s future is settled having agreed to join Super League side Huddersfield at season’s end, he admitted Sheens’ comments had got some players questioning their future at the club.

“It put a couple of people on notice, there’s no doubt about that,” said Hodgson, who will play his last home game for the Tigers in Friday’s match against Cronulla at Leichhardt Oval.

“Not by specifically naming names, but I think everyone is thinking in their back of their head - `was he talking about me?’”

Sheens was today reluctant to elaborate on the comments, but admitted the changes would not be confined to the playing roster.

“If we have to make changes, players will be tapped on the shoulder and changes will be made,” Sheens said.

“But there’s a lot of things that have got to be done as well as player recruitment.”

Pressed on the issue, Sheens said: “I think you’re dragging stuff out of me I don’t want to talk about.

“I’m just trying to focus on the game (against the Sharks). Our season’s not finished.

“It was disappointing last week and the week before (40-12 loss to Parramatta), very disappointing.

“We’ve got to look at a whole host of things, but now we’re concentrating on Friday and that’s really all I want to work on.”

Despite remaining only a slim mathematical chance of reaching the finals, the Tigers hope wins in their remaining matches against the Sharks and Gold Coast could be enough.

“There’s two games to go, 28 points on offer,” Sheens said.

“We’ve just got to play for that and let things fall where they fall.

“You don’t know where you’ll be in two weeks time.”

One positive from 2008 for Sheens has been the emergence of rookie prop Daine Laurie, whom he has promoted to the starting line-up against the Sharks after scoring twice against the Sea Eagles.

Laurie, who is quickly becoming a cult figure, fronted the media for the first time today and told reporters he had no fear about the NRL after his experiences in the ARL’s Annual Aboriginal Knockout competition.

“No way in the world bruz,” Laurie chirped when asked if he was scared by the NRL.

“Come to knockout footy and see what scared is, I’ll teach you what scared is.”

Laurie admitted he had been on a huge learning curve since coming to Sydney from Yamba on the northern NSW coast.

“Before I came here I didn’t realise you have to put in as much as you really do,” Laurie said.

“It’s a whole different ball game out here man.”

Sheens has named John Morris at halfback for Friday’s match, with Robbie Farah switching to hooker and youngster Tim Molzten replacing Dean Collis in the centres.
