The SuperCheap Auto 1000 at Mount Panorama at Bathurst in NSW is one of Australia’s great sports events.
Seeing that the “Great Race” is upon us, now it’s time to look back on some of the most memorable moments that have made the Bathurst 1000 one of the great races in the world of motorsport:
1. Peter Brock wins by 6 laps in 1979 – Out of all the wins that Peter Brock achieved on the mountain, this was the one that stood out. He even broke the lap record on the last lap of the race.
2. Dick Johnson & The Rock 1980 – Dick Johnson was leading in the 1980 Bathurst 1000 when he was hampered by a rock thrown at his car by a Holden supporter. It cost Johnson the race and allowed his main rival Peter Brock to notch up yet another Bathurst 1000 victory.
3. The 1-2 finish, 1977 – The sight of the Ford cars that had 1 and 2 (the winner was Allan Moffat and Belgium’s Jacky Ickx) on their cars and finished in that order, is an enduring memory.
4. Marcus Ambrose & Greg Murphy clash, 2005 – On lap 145, Marcus Ambrose & New Zealand’s Greg Murphy clashed after a pile-up that allowed Mark Skaife to win the 2005 race.
5. Peter Brock’s first win, 1972 – Peter Brock’s first win on the mountain in 1972 was a significant one. It was the last ever win by a solo driver, with teams now using two drivers to contest the race.
The mountain is calling….

Jason, hard to leave out the following;
- Glen Seaton in 1995, engine fails 9 laps from the finish in a commanding position, heartbreaking loss
- Nissan GTR “Godzilla” in 1992, pouring rain, Jim Richards calling the crowd a pack of you know whats
- Rudi Eggenberger’s Sierra’s in 1987, disqualified giving Brock his 9th and last victory, ending Bathurst as a round of the World Touring Car championship

geez, what about kev bartletts camaro rollover up past reid park?. Runs out of brakes and puts the thing on its roof. Within 20seconds of him sitting down on the grass bank nearby the crowd has provided him a beer & a smoke! To his credit he drank the beer and smoked the ciggie. You’d never see that these days…. a great moment.

what year was it when Brock was miles behind and drove like a mad man in the wet to win? he was sideways for about the last hour or so.
I saw a UK motor mag rate the video of that race in their top 10 driving vids of all time.

How about Bill Brown rolling his Falcon along the armco, essentially cutting it in half, and walking away with some glass in his eye… Early 1970′s

Yeah, that Bill brown footage is scarey stuff.
Whate about the first time they got a camera in a car and peter williamson in a toymota almost went straight up the arse end of a truck on live TV? A great first for motor sport for sure!
Modern “supercar” racing is a bit too manufuctured for me these days. All the drivers seem bland….

I think it was in 1979 that Peter (?) Williamson, driving a Celica, they had to bash into the rear with an axe to access the fuel tank.
Also the first appearance of Alan Moffatt in the rotary engine Mazda Rx-7 – - – anyone might have thought he was out there in a solar powered vehicle!!! What was that, early ’80s, 81 or 82 or something??
And the other end of the spectrum – - the blue and white Ford Cobras – - they were beasts. Was that 1978?
I will never forget the Bob Morris Torana with the channel 7 ’7′ – - – I made sure to get photos of it at the museum.
Greatest Bathurst moment though – -
driving around the track in 2005 the Tuesday before the race – - – in the family wagon – - – with the kids – - – and coming across the Skyline and down through the dipper behind a big whopping tour bus…………………….

I dont have 5 memories that come off the top of my head but here is a couple.
1.Craig Lowndes breaking the drought for ford at Bathurst.
2.Ford sweeping the podium
3.Mark Skaife crashing on the first lap
They are the good ones but there is lots of crap ones that involve holden winning.

All those memories are awesome, and the odd kangaroo carnage makes for a good spectacle, but for me the win dedicated to Brockie by Loundes brings a lump to my throat every time, was an awesome race to boot with girlyman-voice Kelly right up his clacker the whole way…

It has never been proven that a Holden supporter or anybody else for that matter ‘threw’ the rock that caused Dick’s accident. In fact, an uncle of mine who was sitting in that area has said a druken Ford fan who was making an idiot of himself in front of the crowd moments before, was probably responsible for dis-lodging the rock in question.
