The SuperCheap Auto 1000 at Mount Panorama at Bathurst in NSW is one of Australia’s great sports events.
Seeing that the “Great Race” is upon us, now it’s time to look back on some of the most memorable moments that have made the Bathurst 1000 one of the great races in the world of motorsport:
1. Peter Brock wins by 6 laps in 1979 – Out of all the wins that Peter Brock achieved on the mountain, this was the one that stood out. He even broke the lap record on the last lap of the race.
2. Dick Johnson & The Rock 1980 – Dick Johnson was leading in the 1980 Bathurst 1000 when he was hampered by a rock thrown at his car by a Holden supporter. It cost Johnson the race and allowed his main rival Peter Brock to notch up yet another Bathurst 1000 victory.
3. The 1-2 finish, 1977 – The sight of the Ford cars that had 1 and 2 (the winner was Allan Moffat and Belgium’s Jacky Ickx) on their cars and finished in that order, is an enduring memory.
4. Marcus Ambrose & Greg Murphy clash, 2005 – On lap 145, Marcus Ambrose & New Zealand’s Greg Murphy clashed after a pile-up that allowed Mark Skaife to win the 2005 race.
5. Peter Brock’s first win, 1972 – Peter Brock’s first win on the mountain in 1972 was a significant one. It was the last ever win by a solo driver, with teams now using two drivers to contest the race.
The mountain is calling….

Sorry gents but for me it still has to be Greg Murphys record breaking qualifying lap. I remember watching all of the pit crews from the other teams giving him a standing ovation. Outstanding driving. I imagine this record will stand for a few more years yet. I must agree skaife crashing on the first lap was a real hoot.
