Wayward Collingwood star Alan Didak has publicly apologised over his part in last month’s drink-driving scandal and says he is desperate to see out his AFL career as a Magpie.

Didak and teammate Heath Shaw both placed their football futures in jeopardy and were suspended for the remainder of the season when they lied to club officials over an incident in which Shaw drove drunk and Didak was a passenger.

Didak tonight said the subsequent six weeks had been the toughest period of his life.

“I think it’s the right time to come out and say that I’m sorry to the supporters, my family, the club and (Collingwood president Eddie McGuire),” he told the Nine Network’s AFL Footy Show.

“Just to say that I stuffed up and I’m sorry.”

Didak said he and Shaw lied about the affair to try to stop it becoming a major media story, but now realised it would have been much easier to sort out had they come clean initially.

While Collingwood officials are yet to determine whether Didak and Shaw will stay at the club or be traded, Didak said his time out of the side had rammed home how important being a Collingwood player was to him.

“I’ve really thought about how much I want to be at Collingwood and how much I really want to stay and be a part of the future,” he said.

Despite his history of indiscretions, Didak denied he had a drinking problem and said he believed he deserved another chance at Collingwood.

“I think I deserve to stay, I’m willing to do whatever it takes to stay my whole career,” he said.

“I think people deserve another chance and hopefully I get that.”
