Most people tuned in to the exclusive telecast before the Grand Final on Saturday thought Collingwood was a concluded destination for Ben Cousins. But they were wrong.
Although Cousins didn’t name a club of choice, there was only one that he even referred to as saying he’d like to join. The best club would be a club that has already had exposure to this kind of thing – best equipping them for what he’s gone through.
Not to mention, he said, that he has always wanted to be a one club player.
But before Cousins came out naming the Eagles (yes, his old club who sacked him) as his club of choice, it came on the back of endorsements on Friday from coach John Worsfold and assistant coach Peter Sumich saying they’d welcome him back to the club.
And a few weeks ago star players Dean Cox and Daniel Kerr joined the chorus saying they want Cousins back at the club, too.
So the coaches want him back, the players want him back, and Cousins wants to come back. He wants to return to help repay the club that stood by him time and time again.
This time it’s his turn to stand by the club in the hour of need and deliver on the promises he gave.
But what about the fans, do they want him back?
Channel 7 did a poll and out of 16,000 people, 95 percent voted Yes, they want him back. But a TV poll wont cut it.
What the board needs to see is a petition, signed by the supporters of the club – the people that pay good money to the club in tickets and merchandise.
BringBackBen is being tabled with the Board in late October urging them to pick Cousins with their second pick of the pre-season draft.
So all supporters can make a difference and help Bring Ben Back.

Cousins himself as ruled out the West Coast Eagles without explicitly saying it. On CH 7 GF preview he said he needed a club that would help with the addiction and clearly West Coast failed miserably. He needs to get out of the fishbowl of Perth and come to at least to a bigger fishbowl in Melbourne.
In reality the spotlight in Melbourne would be just as harsh, I suspect a move to Sydeny or Brisbane would be ideal.

Having lived in Perth for 15 years I’m 100% with RedB for once.
Perth is definitely a fishbowl, especially the western (trendy) suburbs where the footy players hang out and party. At half a dozen nightclubs and pubs they are everything and can do anything. They are the big stars in a small town, and it is an artificial environment over there. Apologies to Perthites in saying this – and in fact some of the charm of Perth is that it has retained this feel despite growing fast, so its not all bad by any means. But for a big AFL player it is the LAST town where their feet would stay on the ground.
A dose of Melbourne where he would be reconised but as one of many, or a dose of Sydney where he would be also recognised but that would be balanced by AFL being not so major a sport, would do him some good. Oh, and I’d make one of the terms of his contract that he do a weekly stint helping out the juniors in a practical way. Give him some perspective and responsiblity and see whether he rises to it.

Redb – he said ‘what better club to deal with it than one thats had exposure to it’ HE said he wants to be back there… and Melb would crucify him, go join the pies with Didak and the Shaws? not to mention living in the same city as Michael Gardiner and having Eddie cover everything up! I say bring him back to WCE where he wants to go adn everyone wants him there – and sign the petition http://www.bringbackben.com.au to help do it!
Yes Perths a FIshbowl, but as long as he keeps his head above water he’ll be loved and supported, exactly what he needs!

Give it a rest Joe, as an Eagles fan I can see the enormous hole his departure has left in the team, but the club must stand for something or risk becoming an even bigger laughing stock. Cousins had his nine lives, it’s now time for him and the club to move on. You and a few other hardcore followers have turned this issue into some sort of quasi-religious crusade. He’s not the Messiah he’s just a very naughty boy.
