Dragons crush struggling Hawks
The South Dragons have continued their impressive road form with a 114-95 win over Wollongong at the WIN Entertainment Centre.
It was a night of contrasting fortunes for Beijing Olympic teammates Mark Worthington and Glen Saville.
Dragons forward Worthington did as he pleased, scoring 19 points and adding nine assists in the comfortable win, while his former Sydney Kings teammate Saville (9 points) endured a disappointing night.
Worthington and Saville were both part of the Boomers’ Olympic campaign which ended in a quarter-final defeat to eventual gold medallists the United States.
Tonight, it was Worthington who had the better of their All-Star match up.
In Saville’s defence, his team never got going against a Dragons side that won its third away game of the season.
The first half showed why the Dragons are considered to be a top four hope and the Hawks are given little hope of making the playoffs.
South had a balanced offence and hard working defence with Worthington (12 points), Cortez Groves (11) and bench guard Nathan Herbert (10) dining out on the Wollongong defence.
The Hawks on the other hand struggled to get open shots. Saville and fellow starter Kavossy Franklin were a combined 1-of-16 from the field over the opening 24 minutes.
Import forward Dusty Rychart’s 14 first-half points was a rare shining light for the hosts. He finished the night with a team-high 22.
Groves, a former Wollongong player, provided most of the second half highlights on his way to a game-high 25 points.
