It’s about how Peter Roebuck called for his sacking a year a go for unsporting behaviour and unable to control his team. Just writing in that spirit (I don’t really believe he should be sack)

The Simpsons joke about football riots

I’m just linking two stereostypes and criticism of the game giving people (flimpsy) reason why they riot.

I guess it’s one of those things that in Australia we didn’t have hoolignaism to the same extent as England. Perhaps its one of those jokes that it is a bit politically incorrect but ok until you tell it to someone until you find out they’ve been personally effected by it (people joking about death, terrorism, cancer etc)

Can’t speak for Australia but my dad’s told me about following Chelsea in the 70s and 80s and seeing people badly cut and bashed up so I wouldn’t imagine football hooliganism is joke material.

I always thought traditionally stands for Western Oriental Goldminers. It was used to discriminate against Asians during the gold rush in the 19th century. Later it was adopted for other ethnicity I guess that includes blacks and then the greeks/italians.

Still I thought that whole chant wouldn’t be so offensive to remove by the censor when there is already best selling Football book with the exact name.

I’m not going to debate the origin of the term, but from a generic deployment - referring to any foreign person in the 1950s, the term now firmly refers to a black man. Or at least it was imbued with new meaning from the golliwogs. Thus to clarify wog in GB means black man. I don’t think it would be very well received by Paul Sackey, for example, whereas Monty Panasar might be mildly perplexed. A derogatory term for an Asian person is the shortening of the work pakistani. I should know, given that I live in England and grew up in Streatham.

I guess the point was if the game was only play by sheila wog and poofters as the negative stereotypes. THen everyone is a sheila wog and poofter. SOrt of taking ownership of a negative stereotype like the Italian/Greek took ownership of the word Wog in Australia

I wouldn’t try to develop a football chant employing the word wog. It is a derogatory term for a black man in Europe and the USA. I’m pretty convinced that poofter has the same meaning the world over.
