You hear it said all the time, “there is more to life than sport.” Obviously, when faced with such a statement it is near impossible to claim otherwise. Sport, however, unlike anything else, has the ability draw people together.

Just look at the 2008 Olympic Games.

What, other than the biggest sporting event in the world, could encourage 204 nations to meet up in the Chinese capital?

Not convinced?

Rewind fifteen months to July last year, a time when the Iraq football team negotiated their way to Asian Cup glory.

In the process, they demonstrated to the world that Shi’ites, Sunnis and Kurds can all coexist – contrary to popular belief.

The power of sport will once again be felt this coming Saturday when the inaugural Asian Beach Games commence in Bali, Indonesia.

No less than 40 countries will converge on the island paradise to compete in nineteen different sports. All this merely six years after the Indonesian island was targeted by terrorists, and then attacked again three years later in October 2005.

So now, after years of trying to bounce back, one could say that it all culminates over the next couple of weeks as the Games unfold on the pristine beaches of Bali.

Most importantly, one feels that while the Asian Beach Games are undoubtedly a stage for athletes to shine, it is also a celebration of having fun at sports such as beach volleyball, beach soccer and beach sepaktaraw.
