AFL confirms clubs can lose points if players test positive

AFL boss Andrew Demetriou has confirmed clubs could lose points or even a premiership if players test positive to drugs on match day.

Demetriou said the AFL Commission had the power to act if more than one player in a club had positive results.

“If more than one player at one club tests positive to performance enhancing drugs the league can act under rule 18 of the anti-doping code,” Demetriou told The Australian newspaper.

The AFL was seeking to clarify the extent of the commission’s powers as it assesses the conditions that would apply to the return of former West Coast player Ben Cousins to competition.

Cousins, who was suspended for a year for bringing the game into disrepute because of his drug addiction has applied to be re-registered so he can enter the December national draft.

Crowd Says (1)

Given match day performance enhancing drugs testing is the domain of the WADA drugs policy and procedures - - these players would also be incuring a 2 year ban as well.

This reminds me of the ignorant Channel 9 Today Show sportsman, Cameron Williams - who, commenting on this story suggested the AFL drugs policy was soft no matter which way you looked at it……………..I’m wondering if he even realises that this story has nothing whatsoever to do with the AFL illicit drugs policy which is for ‘out of competition’ testing.

Noting that back in 2006 Williams commented that had Wendall Sailor been playing in the AFL that his positive test would’ve been kept confidential and he’d have still been playing without the public knowing - - well, Williams was missing the point entirely that Sailor had tested positive to WADA testing. Would have had exactly the same penalty in AFL, or NRL for that matter - - and we all know that WADA testing has failed to land the scalps of Ben Cousins and Andrew Johns.

The fact that Cameron Williams continues to make ignorant and misleading comment on this topic is sad as it shows a very superficial understanding of a major cross code topic.
