International Rules teams aim for better off-field ties

The Australian and Irish teams will seek to forge closer off-field ties in their efforts to rescue the International Rules series. On-field violence during the 2005 and 2006 series nearly killed off the concept, leading to a postponement last year.

Only a series of negotiations between the AFL and the Gaelic Athletic Association kept the series alive.

Irish coach Sean Boylan has said his greatest disappointment from the 2006 tour was that the two teams did not have an opportunity to mix socially.

The two squads will have a joint dinner in Perth on Wednesday ahead of the first Test at Subiaco on October 24.

“There will be opportunity for players to mix before the first game, that’s something we’ve discussed with the Irish,” AFL operations manager Adrian Anderson said today.

“We’ve got full confidence, discussing the game with (Australian coach Mick Malthouse) and our Irish counterparts, that it will be played in a good spirit.”

North Melbourne great Brent Harvey was named as Australian captain today, with Hawthorn premiership utility Campbell Brown and West Coast midfielder Adam Selwood the vice-captains.

While the Australians are emphasising the need for fair play, Harvey promises they will still attack the ball as hard as possible.

Brown’s presence and his senior status in the young squad also indicates this will not be a group of shrinking violets.

“I’m sure it’s going to be in good spirit anyway, we’ve had a couple of (incidents) over the years and it won’t get back to that,” Harvey said.

“As long as we play it in the right spirit, I’m sure the Irish boys will do the same and this game will be around for a long time.

“We’ll be hard at the ball, no doubt, and that will be our most important aim.”

Malthouse was confident his squad of 25 would approach the games in the right way.

“We’re ever-reminded about what took place in the past … (but) I’m a great believer in sportsmanship at its highest level,” he said.

“The fundamental right is to be able to attack the football in the right sense, but have that fair-mindedness about it that we’re representing Australia, we are the front window for our sport.

“One of the criteria of them being picked and one of the things they hold dear to themselves is their ability to play hard football, but fair football.

“I’m hopeful that’s going to be demonstrated, but we’ll certainly be talking about it - we’re not going to harp on it.”

Harvey and Brown were among only eight members of the national squad who trained today, with many others still away on post-season leave.

The squad will come together on Sunday in Perth.

They might be able to sort out the on-field woes, but surely the elephant in the room is what is going to continue happening off the field the other 363 days of the year.

Norm said  | October 17th 2008 @ 7:21pm | Report comment

why is this story under the AFL tab - they’re not playing aussie rules.

Michael C said  | October 17th 2008 @ 8:23pm | Report comment

Norm -

that’s a veryu good point - - and perhaps you and I should join forces to lobby theRoar administrators to change the AFL tab name to “Australian Football”, as, the International Rules better fits as a ’subset’ of “Australian Football” - - but, then, there’s a fair argument that RL, RU, Soccer and Aust Footy should all be sitting under ‘Australian Football”………

but, true, it should more so be in ‘Other sports’. The only thing is that the Australian side is entirely populated by AFL players - - - so, it’s fair enough where it is.

oikee -

I gather the games are live on ch.7 - - into AFL states. I’ll be heading in on the 31st to the ‘G with a coupla mates and dine in the MCC members.

but the Irish side is entirely populated by GAA players….so its not fair enough where it is.

MC,

Got tickets as well, looking forward to it. If it is anything like previous IR games it will be a great spectacle.

ah - Norm - we need to present a unified front here lad!!!

The entire Australian ‘interest’ is based around the Australian player contingent……….and……..we all know that the main reason is to serve up Irish meat on a silver platter for AFL scouts to check out!!!

Michael C ( and I am being serious ) what are your predictions i.e who will win and by what margin? I’m going to hold you to it.

Norm,

No idea until first test at Subiaco. This is the beauty of two previously unmatched countries playing a hybrid game.

I think Australia, but dont really know.

The international, is the following correct 11 players per side, football gaols with a net, a goal keeper, played on a Rectangle fielid using the same dimensions as football field.

Getting close …….. almost there ……… keep the changes coming ……..

Dublin Dave said  | October 19th 2008 @ 12:54am | Report comment

MC
Yeah it’s just like soccer except:

15 players a side, not 11
You get a point for shooting wide of the net
You get three points for kicking the ball over the cross bar
Any player can handle the ball anywhere
The pitch is about half as long again and nearly twice as wide as a soccer pitch

Apart from that, the two codes are identical.

Michael C said  | October 19th 2008 @ 10:17am | Report comment

Norm -

no idea about predictions………..really…….I just want Boomer Harvey (Brent, the Aust captain) to do well and not get hurt!!!

I really don’t care too much who wins….infact, I reckon most people care more that there’s a ‘contest’ more than caring too much about winning or losing………because,……..it’s still more about ‘entertainment’ really, given the hybrid nature.

Midfielder -

yeah,…..dream on,…………could you imagine how knackered soccer players would be even 20 minutes in………..soccer guys just aren’t used to that intensity due not having interchanges…..

mtngry said  | October 19th 2008 @ 8:15pm | Report comment

Is it broadcast?

Michael C said  | October 19th 2008 @ 8:45pm | Report comment

mtngry -

in Melbourne at least, it’s on live - Friday night, 9pm, live from Subiaco.

No idea about other states,

no idea about the following week when Melbourne hosts.
