Sheedy may return to Richmond after 28 years

Former Essendon AFL coach Kevin Sheedy looks set to return to the club where he spent his playing days, Richmond, after 28 years away.

News Limited newspapers report that Sheedy is in talks with Richmond officials to return to Punt Road in 2009, including roles in membership, sponsorship, coterie groups and the new indigenous football academy.

Sheedy ruled himself out of a role with the club’s football department, News Limited said.

Richmond president Gary March said Sheedy met with the club yesterday.

“He’s still got a lot of things on the go, but we’re trying to finalise a role where he can spend time with Richmond on key areas we need to work on,” March said yesterday.

“We haven’t finalised it yet. In fact, he was in at the club today trying to work out some details.

“But we are working to get Kevin back involved in the club.”

Sheedy was tight-lipped.

“I will be having discussions with Richmond over the next month … that’s all I’ll say,” he said.

Sheedy retired from VFL football in 1979 after 251 games with the Tigers, including a stint as captain in 1978 and three premiership wins in 1969, 1973 and 1974.

He began his 27-year reign at Windy Hill in 1981 but promised to return to Richmond in some form once his time with Essendon was up.
