Hawthorn great and four-time AFL premiership-winning coach Leigh Matthews has been named one of Queensland’s seven footballing ‘legends’.

The recently-departed Brisbane Lions mentor was included alongside homegrown sons Jason Dunstall and Michael Voss in AFL Queensland’s honorary list.

The AFLQ unveiled the magnificent seven tonight at the Gabba as it launched the Queensland Australian Football Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame honours 150 players, coaches, umpires, administrators, teams and events in the game’s 150th year.

Matthews, voted the player of the 20th Century, was recognised for elevating the standing of the code in the state by guiding the Lions to a premiership three-peat from 2001-03.

As well as Lions triple premiership-winning skipper Voss and Hawthorn champion Dunstall, Arthur Collinson, Harry O’Callaghan, Dick Verdon and umpire Tom McArthur were named as Queensland legends.

The 150 inaugural inductees to the Hall of Fame include the 100 nominations for the Queensland Team of the Century, which was chosen in 2003, plus the five nominations for the coach
of the century and the umpire of the century.

Gold Coast-bred St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt is among the new players chosen in the Hall of Fame.

The Gabba was inducted as the home of football in Queensland, while special teams inducted were the Queensland side of 1974-75 and the Lions triple premiership sides.
