Olyroo Matt Simon scored twice as Central Coast overturned a three goal second half deficit to force a thrilling 3-3 A-League draw with Sydney FC at Sydney Football Stadium tonight.
Just as they did in their round seven game at Adelaide, the Mariners fought back from 3-0 down in the second half and it was Simon who also scored the equaliser on that occasion.
A win would have put injury hit Sydney top and Stuart Musialik squandered a great chance to put the game beyond the Mariners reach, when he hit the underside of the bar from close range with his team 3-0 up.
The game maintained the recent tradition of dramatic and high scoring clashes between the two NSW rivals, who have now scored 25 goals in their last four encounters.
Mark Bridge and Adam Casey scored spectacular solo efforts before the break and Terry McFlynn lashed home a third for Sydney in the 57th minute.
Simon pulled a goal back in the 63rd minute and substitute Nik Mrdja added another in the 77th minute.
Simon headed home a corner in the 80th minute to complete the comeback and go to the top of the competitions scoring list with his seventh goal of the season.
Bridge opened the scoring against the run of play in the 28th minute, when he cut in to the penalty area and curled a shot from an acute angle across Mariners goalkeeper Danny Vukovic.
Casey scored a similarly improbable goal 11 minutes later when he picked up the ball about 40 metres out, cut inside and curled a left foot shot from the edge of the area inside the post.
The Mariners looked the more dangerous team early on but couldn’t convert any of their chances.
Sasho Petrovski had a close range header blocked by Ivan Necevski and the former Sydney striker’s woes were compounded a few minutes later, when he was booked for diving in the area.
Vukovic kept the Mariners in the game when he blocked an Alex Brosque shot and the follow up attempt from Terry McFlynn in first half stoppage time.
Irishman McFlynn lashed the ball home from the edge of the area for Sydney’s third, but Musialik’s miss proved costly.
Simon, who also needed treatment for injury in the second half, pulled one back when he raced onto a John Hutchinson through ball.
Mrdja, who replaced Petrovski in the second half, scored the second and Simon ensured the Mariners of a hard earned point.

Good on the Central Coast. Thanks to them the Victory are (again) top of the league. Woo!
Oh, and Sydney REALLY should have finished the CC off after that 3rd goal. If there’s one team in the A-league you need to crush when you have the opportunity, it’s the Central Coast. (and Melbourne, but our time in the spotlight was yesterday

It was a cracker of a game to be at and with Nik getting back on the park and IMO the leagues best striker, Matty on fire, Dylan Mac in form & Sash playing steady, with Caceras in behind by F***k we have some strike power just have to tidy up the back.

Apart from a terrific game the other notable was the excellent crowd (for SFC) of over 18,000.

what I saw, it was a cracking game, and CC coach should be happy with the attitude of his boys to come back from 3-1 down…Sydney FC should have no trouble getting at least 20K to their next game.

Kosmina took of one of Sydney’s best players who caused havoc on the wing and who tracked back to defend in the midfield and replace him with a show pony striker prone to standing there and wanting it delivered at his feet and who did not commit once to any jockeying or tackle in defence was a crucial error. The CC backs up to then were stretched for pace but handled Aloisi easily.

I really think that the FFFA are trying to get rid of the SFC; so to allow a West Sydney team to take its place… Look at the evidence and the referee decisions .. I mean; I think I saw six unrewarded penalties; not to mention the blatant oversight of three offsides that that linesman kept his flag down.. For all to see on that 30 sec short vision of highlights on Fox internet this morning .. Something has to be done about the FFFA

Just think after the Mariners where not awarded those six penalties and the offside goal to the Choppers and we still drew ….Choppers paid ref and still got no result ……

Who writes the FFA’s scripts?
5 goal thriller Fri night puts MV back on top.
6 goal thriller Sat night puts Sydney within a point of top.
Roar win a 3 goal tight one to move up to fourth.
Perth win to move up to equal 6th and Wellington only one point behind them.
Is this going to be a repeat of last year when the top 4 were all on equal points with one game to play?
Pip,
this is no conspiracy theory, the evidence is mounting.
Midfielder,
Do you want Aloisi back?
We’ll swap him for Simon – no questions asked.
