Buckley hints more A-League clubs imminent

Football Federation Australia chief executive Ben Buckley today hinted further expansion of the A-League was just around the corner.

In Townsville to rubber-stamp North Queensland’s entry into the league as the tenth franchise in 2009/2010, Buckley said the FFA had ambitious plans for the next two-three years, which included the Fury’s inclusion next season.

“Our strategy is to invest in the growth of the sport, and expansion of the A-League into North Queensland is right for football,” Buckley said.

“It is a very important step for us at FFA, we have got a very ambitious expansion plan over the next two to three years.

“We believe we are creating one of the best national footprints for a sporting code in this country and I think importantly we now have the northern part of Australia represented and in particular North Queensland.”

Buckley sees the addition of the Fury as a stepping stone towards a 12 and possibly 14 team competition with discussions underway with a number consortia for entry into the 2010-11 competition.

“Expansion of the A-League is a critical issue to the continuing evolution and growth of football and this is a very exciting day for FFA,” Buckley said.

“We have already awarded a preferred bidder status in Melbourne, we are working with them over the next few months to try and bring that agreement to completion for their entry into the competition in season six.”

Buckley confirmed a number the A-League bids from NSW-based groups were under review.

“We have got and have received proposals from Canberra, from Wollongong, from the Western part of Sydney and Tasmania as well.”

“There is a lot of interest, there is a lot enthusiasm for additional A-League licenses and we hope to take advantage of that over the next months.”

Girls grab your boys….

2nd Melbourne team all but rubber-stamped.

But why do we keep hearing references to a mysterious West Sydney bid, but then absolutely zero details?

If there is a West Sydney bid (and let’s be honest, the FFA is looking in that direction to the exclusion of anything else), then Tassie, Canberra and South Coast have buckleys and none (for hte moment).

Has Ms Fisher backed the wrong horse??

Millster said  | November 7th 2008 @ 4:58pm | Report comment

Pip I agree but it makes me frown at the same time.

I agree that VIC is grossly under-represented with only one team in the league (especially considering QLD has moved to 3) but the 2nd Melbourne team needs quite some thought to make it work properly. It has to happen, but geez I hope they are careful and clever in getting it going.

West Sydney is quite amorphous to me whereas Illawarra/South Coast is very contrete and very attractive, and we’re also seeing Canberra now firm up with Tassie as another reasonably advanced option from the sounds of it (both very interesting prospects for the move from 12 to 14).

But in the next tranche of expansion, to me it would be outrageous to ignore the Illawarra bid due to chasing the west of the big smoke.

I must say, I also like the ‘feel’ of an eventual 14-team league that would have Townsville, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Central Coast, Sydney, Illawarra, Canberra, Melbourne, Vic 2, Tassie, Adelaide, Perth and NZ. Seems nicely balanced to me, with my hopes for the move from 14 to 16 being a Fremantle team and a Christchurch team to maintain that balance and shore up the extremities. You will note that I think NSW will be well enough represented without a West Sydney team.

Pip

An old Slade fan too I see …….. I think there is a second Sydney bid and more than one from what I hear.

Mil agree with your teams but take out Tassie and put in a WS Team ……. you ES spoiled types ….. need to go out west and meet the heartland (beer, birds, builders, tradies, utes, vans) get away from the “wine sipping, curry puff eating” sorts.

Also when you see how far it is and how bad the roads you will understand one of the key reasons why the Choppers get such por crowds ……… travel it’s a nightmare

I have to agree with Midfielder that you can’t leave Australia’s biggest city with one team - but agree that this 2nd Melb team has “rushed” written all over it.

Midfielder
“Old” is the operative word - when I was 11 - no one and nothing was bigger than Slade (Daddy Cool were already on the slide by then) - I still love all the Glam rock stuff from around 1973 to this day.

jimbo said  | November 7th 2008 @ 10:12pm | Report comment

Its good to see that despite all the gloom and doom and fierce competition from other codes, the FFA remains upbeat and continues to lead the way in football expansion.

Pip,
I can’t see why a 2nd Melb team won’t succeeed and meet the 10K benchmark.
Sydney might be the biggest city, but Melb has the biggest number of sports followers and the cross town rivalry might turn out to be bigger than we think. Who knows.

Pippu - I wouldn’t laugh at you and the things you do ….. oops better stop there.

Midfielder - that Forever Young video was a serious nostalgia trip for me - memories of my Bain Super Flex board…. I had to double-check i didn’t still have those scabs on my elbows that were a constant part of me for about two years. There was probably a young Sheyne Horan amongst that crowd - he seemed to be one of the faces of local skateboarding in the seventies.

cheers

Expansion? Oh yeah, excellent idea!

Thats for the links

One of the joys l had from watching English Football on the TV back in the 70s (even tho it weren’t live) was the way the crowd picked up on the popular songs of the times and turned them into their own battlecries/anthems.
Remember watching a Man U game in about 1974 when they were in 2nd division playing v Nottm Forest at the City Ground. United fans packed behind the Trent goal bouncing and singing “United are back” to the tune of Gary Glitters “Good to be back” when it became clear United were going to win promotion back up to 1st Division again.

ahh good times. Me, my brother and my grandfather (who’s over 90) stood up and scream when Aloisi scored that penalty

I would have liked to see some other soccerroos disaster like Australia getting knocked out by the iran/kuwait in 1978. kiwis in 1982 and israel/kiwis in 1990. Though I guess it wan’t as dramatic as a elimination by playoffs

You asked 1997 Iran V Australia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pziKluqYnd4&feature=related Kool played a magic that night and was hacked all night.

But if we had won those pricks that where the old NSL would still have been running the game ….. maybe it was good in the end but I did not sleep for three days.

Cheers for all that Midfielder. Liked Reverse the curse…brought back some memories. The 2nd leg v Argentina was the first football match I ever watched. I was in primary school at the time and my whole year level stopped working to watch the match. As I’ve said before, I can’t remember anything about the Iran second leg (thankfully). I remember the first clearly though. Uruguay ‘01 still hurts like hell. I went to the first leg at the MCG and went nuts when Muscat scored. I remember people singing “we’re going to Montevideo! Monte-vi-de-o!” as I was leaving the stadium. Then in the second leg…remember the 2nd Morales goal that killed us, broke down in tears soon after. Then 05 - first leg thought we’d blown some chances to get a goal (eg the Viduka header) but felt like we were going to do it. Won’t go on about the return leg but being there was fantastic, best moment of my life so far. I was lucky enough to be at the goal / penalties end of Stadium Australia as well.

My Immortal was an interesting choice for background music…forgot how much I liked that song.

Jean Genie - too easy. And yes, the I’m a Man is one of the classics. Jean Genie was in the charts at the same time as Blockbuster by The Sweet which of course had the same riff.

Sorry to mention Man U again but l did like their take of the Liverpool anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” … Stretford end used to sing to the Scousers when playing Liverpool…”You’ll Never Walk Again” same tune :)
One of my favorites, and many sets of supporters sang it, was/is… We shall Not Be Moved…with 10-15,000 supporters singing in unison could be very powerful.

As a more younger person who wasn’t around in the 70’s. I can appreciate Bowie as a musician and a song writer

However I can never get around the fashion of the times or the ultra extravagant dress sense of the glam rockers. Jean Genie, Space Oddity, Ziggy Stardust, Starman, Life On Mars. All great songs. However watching the video clips of those songs makes me cringe.

at the time, to impressionable 11 to 13 years olds - the make up, gear and platform shoes was the best of the best! (I still own a pair of original platforms from the period, and people refuse to believe that we actually wore these babies)

good review clip of glam rock - but Cooper released Poison almost 30 years later! - Gudbuy to Jane was always one of my favourite Slade songs - those Roxy Music covers! - Alvin Stardust, there’s a blast from the past! - Marc Bolan was one of the best - The Osmonds??!! what are they doing there?! - they played Joan Jett over Suzi Q!!! Sacrilege!! - Pity about the Glitter name these days, but for a two year peiod back then he was HUGE!!

Just watched the Jean Genie clip again!!

Das

Why the fashion; because it said who you where, like I guess tats for people in the 90’s.

I had some great gear my favourite was a white body shirt (for body shirt read fitted like a stocking and the material looked the same) purple belt less flares stove pipe tight to the knees and flared out hugely by the time they got to your feet, burgundy colour boots come half way up to your knees with a platform heel raised about two inches. Wore this outfit as well as a crazy tie of the time massively big, about three times a big as ties today again full of colours and weir shapes woven into the tie, my hair was about half way down my back ……Man did I look the part ……anyway I have been in the bank about 3 months and they promoted me to the systems and procedures department in their new high teck offices. When I arrived the security refused to let me in called the police and the manager was brought down and I had my transfer papers so by lunch I was allowed to my desk.

Other great gear monkey shirts (from the band on TV) double breasted shirts a bright red and blue one both had gold buttons, with brilliant white jeans , boots, two inch silver studded black belt. Sometimes with the white or deep blue jeans wore black pointie toed shoes.

Das it was as much about following fashion and also a statement of sorts like my experience at the bank and parents would say “ young people today” . You felt noticed and Oh how the girlies loved those body shirts and the pants …….. mate the shirts were so tight you had to be fit to wear em they showed everything every bit of flab no matter how small. As for the flares so tight from the waist to knees F**k they we hard to put on, but if you had a good shape …….. the girlies noticed and I liked the girlies noticing me ……. So fashion / a statement from the youth / posing and sex ………. Great times where’s that Dr Who we you need em.
