New Zealand's David Fa'alogo, on ground, and Jeremy Smith, top, right, clash with Australia's Anthony Laffranchi (11) during the Rugby League World Cup Final game between Australia and New Zealand in Brisbane, Australia, Saturday, November 22, 2008.

Despite being a card carrying Aussie and Roosters fan of 40 years, I am happy that Australia lost the World Cup. I was disgusted with their theiving of Tupou from a Pacific Islands team when another Australian player withdrew. Rugby League and in particular in NRL and ARL is cynical in the extreme.

For starters:

1. Reliance on poker machine revenues and profits
2. Scrums that are embarrassing
3. Player behaviour
4. Squealing about player drain after they had done exactly that to rugby for decades
5. Dressing up gambling promotion as charity efforts (Lady Luck on Channel 9)
6. Long seasons and too many games for the star players
7. Squealing that smoking bans are reducing leagues club revenues! (the inference being that it is acceptable for people to smoke, killing themselves and those around them, and destroying families, if it means more revenue for rugby league)

Enough is enough. The golden goose is being slaughtered on the altar of self-interest and nothing will, or can, stop it.

Maybe this will be a wake up call. But I suspect it won’t be heard and is probably too late.
