Jason Krejza declared himself fit and ready to take on South Africa in next week’s first Test at the WACA after returning figures of 1-45 as Tasmania slid to a six-wicket limited overs defeat to South Australia at Adelaide Oval.

A month to the day since his remarkable Test debut against India at Nagpur, Krejza’s first ball in anger of the Australian summer was ironically delivered to a subcontinental batsman – Pakistani recruit Younis Khan.

There was one ugly full toss that Younis dispatched to the midwicket boundary, and the odd good delivery that bounced and turned, but overall Krejza could be happy to have shown little discomfort in the ankle that he twisted a fortnight ago to miss out on the second Test against New Zealand at Adelaide Oval.

Krejza’s limited preparation for South Africa counts as a concern for the Australian selectors and, watching in the stands, selection panel chairman Andrew Hilditch could not have determined much, beyond Krejza’s fitness, from the initial spell.

The spinner was not assisted either by the suave batting of Younis and Michael Klinger, who offered few of the suicidal shots that contributed to several of his 12 wickets at Nagpur.

Still, Krejza was satisfied, confident in both his body and his bowling.

“It was always the confidence of getting on that ankle and bowling well so that worked perfectly and now I can get into the nets and bowl lots of balls,” he said after play.

“Michael Klinger batted beautifully and a couple of our batsmen, Michael Dighton and Travis Birt batted fantastically as well.

“We thought it was going to have a little more turn but didn’t.”

Tasmanian captain Daniel Marsh curiously delayed Krejza’s entry to the attack until the 22nd over, after he had employed all six of his other bowling options.

“It would’ve been nice to get out there a little earlier, but that’s how the game panned out and I’ll bowl when I’m told,” Krejza said.

He was to return for a second spell towards the end of SA’s successful chase, and deceived Callum Ferguson with a quicker ball before the game was out.
