SCG no raging turner this time around

SCG curator Tom Parker expects some hot weather to produce a good surface for the third cricket Test between Australia and South Africa starting on Saturday, but doubts the spinner-friendly ground will produce a raging turner.

With the mercury soaring past 30 degrees in Sydney on Wednesday and tipped to reach 34 on Thursday, Parker said the Test strip was undergoing a good preparation.

Some showers have been forecast for between Friday and Monday, but Parker was pleased with the way the weather had panned out in the days leading up to the Test.

“The weather has been quite good, it’s quite warm here today and it’s supposed to be hot again tomorrow,” Parker said.

“We’ve been able to put plenty of water into the whole wicket area and the pitch as well, so it’s been great for us.

“It should be quite a good surface, I think.”

The SCG has traditionally offered good assistance for the spinners and Parker expected the slow bowlers would elicit some turn from the match pitch as the game progressed.

“It always spins at the SCG, day three, day four,” Parker said.

“It’s not going to be a raging turner, but hopefully it’s going to be a good all round cricket pitch.”

The SCG curator since 1997, Parker said he was pleased with the way the ground had pulled up after plenty of match traffic over the past month.

He said he always aimed to produce a pitch with good consistent bounce and carry to the `keeper, though he stated the wicket would inevitably play a little differently every day.

Four first-class matches at the SCG this season have produced three outright results and one draw.

Australia has not lost a Test there since 2003, when England triumphed at the venue.
