South Australian cyclist Annette Edmonton has broken the Australian Youth Olympics (AYOF) 200m sprint record on an up-and-down day for the host nation.

Edmonton, 17, sliced half a second off the previous record, clocking 11.689 seconds at the Bass Hill velodrome in Sydney’s west on Thursday.

“It came as a big surprise. It was good,” Edmonton said.

“I was hoping to go sub 12, I’ve only done that once before. I wasn’t sure where I was in the training, I’ve just done a big power phase and not much speed.

“To come out with that time was just cool.”

The previous festival record was 12.340 seconds, set by Ting Ying Huang of Taiwan at the 2007 event.

In the men’s sprint qualification, New Zealand’s Sam Webster also belted the festival record, clocking 10.356 to better Wade Cosgrove’s mark of 10.845 set in 2001.

Fellow Kiwi Ethan Mitchell clocked 10.784 seconds to also better Cosgrove’s record.
