Jonesy…. I can only offer my deepest condolences. I’m enormously saddened by this news.

Having had the privilege of meeting 'Symonds', I was amazed by the endurance and resilience that was always shown. Though, at times in a dark corner looking dejected, empty or broken,‘Symonds’s quiet dignity and strength always shone through: A battler and true icon of the game. Rest in Peace. You were an inspiration to us all.

(I have to mention I still have my Dean Jones model pads. Evidently they have outlasted yours. They will retire when I do. I shall never let them die)

I fitting article for one of Australian Sports unsung heroes. Like those that have been before it quietly goes about its business without fanfare, without crying for attention. Indeed a throwback to a more noble time.

A mate of mine refers to another mates wife as "the package" because she is a good sort, good humoured, reasonable, otherwise devoid of major psychological hang ups. I don't know what you would call a wife who buys cricket gear!!!

I recall switching my kit bag and discovering a banana in one of the pouches from about 4 seasons ago. Not a nice site.

And we've all played with those guys who insist on rocking up to matches with their gear in a plastic shopping bag. Then there's the test-match who has his kit sorted in labeled compartments...

Someone should write a book about kit bags...you can tell a lot about a guy from the state of his bag.
