Everyone’s a winner in the Superbowl

Ever since sport was given it’s competitive touch, the Americans have characteristically put their own edge on the four games that have dominated their sporting headlines.

If “American-is-ation” has not caught you by storm, and the Stanley Cup, World Series and NBA playoffs mean nothing to you, prepare to be blown away by Superbowl bonanza.

It’s a day when the rest of the world and it’s drama are pushed to one side and become America’s audience; when 97 million people tune in for reasons varying from liking the game to wanting to view the act of patriotism shown at the anthem.

Television audiences are kept captivated during the proceedings with the eagerly anticipated commercials allowing for the odd laugh now and again. Though it’s highly doubted that people maintained amusement after the sixth obscene Doritos add that did nothing but reinforce the stereotypical comment that Americans have ‘no idea’.

Slight pressure was mounted on the shoulders of “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen to live up to the level of success reached by the likes of Tom Petty, Prince, The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney, in previous Superbowl half time shows.

For viewers to be critical of NBC commentators, Al Michaels and the great John Madden, would appear quite harsh as both committed themselves to the contest by providing constant quality analysis.

With the referee signaling play, and Arizona’s Neil Rackers preparing the kick for the start of game, television audience numbers no doubt sharply plummeted with only die hard fans staying on, leaving the others left to ponder what may have been.

A bad mistake on their behalf.

An Australian presence was felt in Tampa, with Ben Graham leading the Australian contingent for the Arizona Cardinals. Although a glimpse of the ex-Geelong star in action was a rarity with Graham only being called upon five times to execute his punt. As little as that may sound, a teams quality kicking game can sway the result of a match.

A foot of Australian descent has proven to go a long way in NFL selection with our own Saverio Rocca, Philadelphia Eagles and Mat Mcbriar, Dallas Cowboys, along with Graham, showing there’s still room in a strictly American game for a couple of Aussie blokes.

The result further enhanced the Superbowl’s claim for the biggest sporting event in the world. America certainly does it big, but they also do it well.
