Turn the Matchplay Final into an ‘Ashes’ series

An Englishman and an Australian made the final of the World Matchplay Championship. But when Paul Casey and Geoff Ogilvy reached the final, interest in the tournament quickly disappeared.
The tournament has run its course in the United States ever since Tiger and Phil were rudely knocked out and the dominance of players from the other parts of the world continued.
Let’s move the final to somewhere it will be appreciated and where some spectators will turn up.
As it’s an England Vs Australia match-up, maybe we could run it as a series of finals like that other international event, the World Series.
It can be similar to The Ashes, a best of five matches. The first two can be Monday and Tuesday at Royal Melbourne and Kingston Heath and the last three can be Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at Wentworth, Royal Birkdale and Royal Lythan.
We’ll burn the flagsticks, put them in a little cup, and give it to the winner.
I don’t even think we’d have to ask PGA Tour boss Tim Finchem or anyone else for that matter. Apparently no one is watching anyway.

Aussie Golfer, I think this could be a winner..although it should alternate between Australia and England every two years. You’re right – we play England in everything else so why not golf.
It might need to have a unique format to differentiate it from the Ryder Cup and President’s Cup.
You could have a pro stableford event instead of matchplay..where for example a bogey is -3 points..a par is 1 point…a birdie is 3 points..eagle 5 points etc..Just something to make it crazy for the spectators and viewers at home..where a slip up can really cost you the match and it really is never over.
Matchplay is good, but sometimes it just lacks the drama if it’s one sided.
