During the Australian summer, many was the cricket critic that said the Australian team was over the hill, that we would never be as dominant as we were with Warne and McGrath etc, etc, etc.
Having watched the cricket from the first 2 test matches in South Africa it has been a very pleasing fact to see so many young Australians make their mark on the Australian team and on world cricket.
Phil Hughes’s two tons in only his second test and on wickets that the home team have failed to score runs, Hilfenhaus, McDonald and Siddle taking wickets and backing up the ever increasing reliable Johnson, on tracks that the Australians have managed to score reasonable totals on.
What will the critics be saying now? Oh they are just a flash in the pan or the Australians are fresher than the South Africans or will they still have a go at Punter’s captaincy.
It seems to me that whatever the Australian cricket team does there is always somebody making a criticism of the team, even if they are doing a good job.
Australia will never likely have players the same as Warne and McGrath again. They were both once in a lifetime players and Australia were lucky enough to have both at once.
I think we have come to expect to much from the Australian cricket team. We got used to seeing them winning 16 straight tests (this has happened twice in the last several years).
What this series has proven, even though this test is not complete and there is a test remaining, is that a relatively inexperienced Australian team is still capable of winning tests against the best teams in the world.
