I prefer the NRL competition as it’s the hardest, and though it sounds like an oxymoron, the harder competitions are the easiest to win if you stick by this system.

I have already made a mistake by not appointing a captain in the first two rounds but my system gives me confidence as I am currently ranked 79/56738 players on the NRL Dream Team.

1. Once you join a competition, create a file and copy/paste the the details on how players score points. This will help you in the next season as the way players score points change each season, which will give you a slight advantage in choosing players in forth coming seasons.

2. Analyze the stats centre of player’s performance and observe which positions score the most points. Usually second rowers and front rowers are the most prolific scorers. Centres and wings usually score the least amount of points. Even a second rower playing off the bench will score more points than the majority of backs.

3. You need to choose a squad of 25 players with 17 scoring points in any given round, so you should spend as much as you can on your top 17 players. This leaves 8 players who do not score points so choose 8 players at the cheapest price available, which will leave you with as much money as possible for your top 17.

4. This next tip is very important and can give you the edge over competitors. Look for players who in reality play in a high scoring position that are listed in a low scoring position. Often it will be backrowers listed as backs. Examples from this year are Alex Glenn who comes off the bench as a forward and is listed as a back. Hayne plays 5/8 yet is listed as a fullback, so he will get far more opportunities to score points than a fullback. Mateo a hard working forward is listed as 5/8 so again choose the forward. Many hookers are listed as half backs. Choose the hooker.

5. Once you have chosen 8 of the cheapest players in the comp and found all the high scoring positions listed as low scoring positions. Check the stats centre and choose as many of the top scorers your salary cap will allow. Using this system I have managed to fit in 6 of the top 8 players in the comp and the leaders in every position except for centres and halfback.

6. Observe the byes and with positions that have only one bench player try not to have teams that share the bye as you will lose valuable trades. With all the byes, State of Origin and Test Matches 30 trades is not a lot. Use them wisely. It is important to make sure you try and trade players that are scoring heaps of points before the players prices change. If you don’t they may become to expensive to trade after the cut off.

7. Make your trades as late as possible on Friday as teams often change their line at the latest possible moment. I have often been caught out this way.

8. Have faith in your system as the season rolls on you will find your players’ consistency will pay dividends. The leader after round 1 picked a team choc full of Raiders, as the season continues these type of teams will fall.

9. Once your team is finalized it is time to go over your 8 cheapest players and make sure they have a chance of playing with their respective teams. Don’t worry about choosing a couple of players who won’t play in the season. It is more important that you have as many players as possible out of the top scorers.

10. I am not going to add a tenth tip I will leave it for any suggestions by you the punter, so we can improve our system.
