Quiet achievers ready to start with a bang

Quiet achievers North Queensland Fury may not make as much noise as fellow A-League newcomers Gold Coast United, but they are also set to kick-start their historic first campaign with a bang.
As Gold Coast owner Clive Palmer reiterated his desire to win the title on debut – and do it undefeated – a low-key North Queensland have nutted out a pre-season program that is expected to include a three-match tour of Malaysia and Singapore in June.
They are also set to confirm a warm-up game against Palmer’s fellow A-League debutants – but want it played in either a Queensland regional area or in Darwin.
Fury chairman Don Matheson is just as keen to promote soccer in the Northern Territory as he is in north Queensland, refusing to rule out playing some home games at Darwin in the future.
“Darwin are very eager to get behind the club, they showed an interest from the day we started our bid process,” Matheson told AAP.
“They made contact with us, wanted in some way to be included in what we are putting together and we are just picking up on that.
“Who knows, the Northern Territory might be in a position to put their own team together one day – we are here to help the game, that’s what it is all about.”
Asked about the prospect of playing A-League games in Darwin, Matheson said: “That’s not on the landscape at the moment, but it is certainly something we would never discount.”
Palmer’s outspoken approach has certainly turned heads for the Gold Coast but the arrival of Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler in Townsville has made plenty sit up and take notice of North Queensland.
While Matheson stressed the club was yet to finalise their pre-season itinerary, he said Fowler had clearly opened doors for the Fury in Asia.
“We all knew Robbie would add a lot of value to the club,” he said.
“Over in Asia it would be a very attractive proposition to bring Robbie over.
“Our football department has definitely mapped out a program of between 10-13 games (but) there’s nothing we can confirm at the moment.”
Matheson said Fowler – who turned 34 last week – had ticked every box as he prepared for his A-League debut after spending a week in a “heat chamber”.
Matheson rates among Australia’s richest football personalities – he recently ranked in the nation’s top 50 at 33rd, between actor Anthony Lapaglia and Socceroo Craig Moore.
But he has been frugal with his words in comparison to billionaire Palmer.
“We wish him all the best on that one,” he said of Palmer’s bold season plan.
In the most recent draft of the 2009-10 season, the Fury have reportedly been slotted in for a first round away clash against Sydney FC while the Gold Coast are set to play the Roar in a Brisbane blockbuster.
“We just play them as they come, it’s not something we can control,” Matheson said of the mooted schedule.

Good to see a footy club working up north. There must be a few kids up there who’d love to play footy professionally, and the A-league would do well to open up avenues to those youngsters.
