Czech coach Vitezslav Lavicka has vowed to bring the bling back to Sydney FC, promising to focus equally on both playing attractive football in the A-League and getting results.

The former Sparta Prague manager fronted the Australian media for the first team on Friday, a day after arriving in Sydney to became the sky blues’ fifth coach in as many years.

While he still has four months to assess his squad and prepare for the season, Lavicka already has a clear vision for the club which focuses on his philosophy of “discipline and respect, motivation to improve and team unity”.

His predecessor, John Kosmina, who was sacked in January, was sometimes criticised for playing ugly in an attempt to get results, but Lavicka said entertainment would be a high priority of his.

“We have to play attractive,” Lavicka, 45, told reporters at Star City Casino’s Astral Bar.

“It’s not only defence … we do it more for the spectators, the people on the stands.

“We would like to play attractive football but also very important is results … you need balance.

“Football is our job but football is played for the fans.

“I hope many fans will come and watch our games this season.”

Lavicka arrived in Sydney on Thursday along with his assistant Michal Zach, who worked with him at Sparta, Slovan Liberec and the Czech under 21 national team.

The pair will link with former captain and caretaker coach Tony Popovic to form what Sydney chief executive Stefan Kamasz described as “the best coaching staff in Australia”.

Lavicka and Zach met most of the players in China last month for Sydney’s friendly draw against Shanghai Shenhua and will now spend the coming month assessing the squad and determining how it should be strengthened.

Lavicka is expected to bring in two more European-based signings and though he gave little away on Friday as to where they may come from.

“We have many options but we will see if they come from Europe, or other countries … we will see,” said the 35-year-old, who will begin on only a one-year deal.

The two-time Czech coach of the year has already made one significant signing with Slovak international Karol Kisel signing a one-year deal.

The versatile 32-year-old played under Lavicka at Sparta Prague.

“Kisel is a true professional,” Lavicka said.

“I think he will help to lift Sydney FC.”

Sydney have been unable to repeat the success they achieved in winning the title under German coach Pierre Littbarksi in the inaugural 2005/06 season.

Last year, they failed to reach the finals for the first time and the importance of resorting pride to a club considered one of the A-League’s glamour sides is not lost on Lavicka.

“I know the history of Sydney FC,” Lavicka said.

“I come with clear intentions and big motivation to try to improve Sydney FC and to bring success.”

Lavicka said leading Sydney to the title will be far from easy and asked if his side could win the league he only offered a cautious: “We hope so.”
