So the Indian Premier League is up and running for its second season in South Africa, not that you would know if you don’t have access to Channel Ten’s digital channel ONE.
The first seven games has shown that the great cricketers can adapt to any form of the game.
In game one, Sachin Tendulkar was named Man of the Match, with 59 off 49 balls, to lead Mumbai 7/165 to defeat Chennai Super Kings 7/146, with Matthew Hayden top scoring with 44 (35 balls) and MS Dhoni 36 (26 balls).
In game two, Rahul Dravid was named Man of the Match with 66 (48 balls) to help Bangalore Royal Challengers to 8/133, before Anil Kumble destroyed Rajasthan Royals’ batting with 5/5 off 3.1 overs to bowled out for 58, the second lowest team total in the history of Twenty20 cricket.
Game three, Virender Sehwag smashed an unbeaten 38 (16 balls) to help the Delhi Daredevils to a ten-wicket win in their rain affected match against Kings XI Punjab.
In game four, Herschelle Gibbs cracked an unbeaten 43 (26 balls) to lead the Deccan Chargers to an easy eight wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders.
Game five, Matthew Hayden again showed the world that he should be one of the first players picked when it comes to the Twenty20 game with a man of the match performance against Bangalore Royal Challengers with 65 (46 balls), before Muttiah Muralitharan completed the rout with 3/11 (4 overs).
Meanwhile, in game six, Chris Gayle produced a Man of the Match performance with an unbeaten 44 (26 balls)for the Kolkata Knight Riders in their nine-wicket win in the rain affected match against Kings XI Punjab.
I hope that hope Channel Ten show some of the IPL on their regular channel because not everyone can afford a new digital TV or a set-top box.
Also, people in country areas won’t get access to ONE until the middle of the year.

Hey Andy – Great article.
As someone who lives in country NSW, I think it’s absolutely disgraceful that TEN decided to show the IPL on ONE. Surely they got decent numbers of people watching it last season, so why make it so only some people can watch it this time around? Or is there some vital programming late at night that they had to keep on channel 10?!?
If people are as annoyed as me, I think they should write a letter of complaint to channel 10 (as I am) – here are the contact details for all capital city offices:

I’m sure that if enough people wrote in or called to complain, they might change their decision and play it late at night or something. I for one am sick and tired of missing some of the world’s best cricketers perform every night because of some ridiculous decision made by some overpaid television executive bureaucrat. I don’t want to HEAR about it on the news, I want to SEE it. I want to see all my old heroes like Haydos or Gillie smashing the ball around just like they did in their youth…
I’m also sick of the smug comments of the channel 10 newsreaders – “You can watch all the IPL action on ONE” – No we fricken can’t you moron! Stop saying that or I’ll knock ya around with my useless digital TV which can’t pick up ONE ’cause I live in a fricken country area!!! ARRGHHH!!!!

I’ve sent emails to Southern Cross Broadcasting in Canberra about the IPL and ONE in general. Surprisingly enough they don’t want to respond.
Thanks for the links DREWSTER, I’ll give them a go.

There is no point writing to Ten. They don’t broadcast into regional areas. All places that Network Ten broadcast to receive One.
On most of the eastern seaboard Southern Cross Broadcasting run Southern Cross Ten. Ten would no doubt be more than happy to sell the content on to Southern Cross, but Southern Cross are years overdue in installing the equipment – or, more properly, just can’t be bothered spending the money until their advertisers demand it.
In Tasmania, WIN and Southern Cross (mostly WIN with reliance on Southern Cross providing the content from Canberra) jointly run TDT – which will broadcast One as well as Ten programming. They, like everyone else, are waiting for Southern Cross Ten in Canberra to turn on their HD capabilities. This was promised for April 2008 at the latest, yet we – I’m in Canberra – never received TenHD breakaway programming until its dying day.
Similarly in Darwin, DDT has a very similar structure to TDT.
