The Penrith Panthers resisted a brief fight back from the Gold Coast Titans to emerge victorious at CUA Stadium with an impressive 34-20 win.
Penrith were able to strike early through the brilliance of former Novocastrian Luke Walsh, who displayed some great vision in scoring one try and having a hand in another in the first 12 minutes of the match.
The Panthers, who have struggled to fill the number seven jersey since the departure of Craig Gower, may have finally found the man they have desperately been searching for.
Looking a tad lethargic, the Titans found themselves on the wrong end of the momentum for most of the match, with Scott Prince unable to call the shots with the ease he is accustomed to.
The Panthers’ defensive line was quick in meeting the Titans throughout the entire match, culminating in Prince being crashed tackled with the ball on several occasions.
Despite the rallying tries of Kevin Gordon and Brett Delaney, the Titans were outmatched by the tough Penrith outfit, whose win keeps them well in touch with the top eight.
Michael Jennings again wowed his home crowd with some blistering bursts of speed, one run ending in a sensational solo try to put the game beyond doubt.
Jennings’s form has him now regarded as one of the most dangerous attacking centres in the competition, and it has NSW State of Origin selectors’ tongues wagging, hoping Jennings will sign the papers to make him eligible for selection.
Many believe that it will take young talents like Jennings to stop the Queensland back line juggernaut from securing a fourth consecutive series win for the Maroons.

What a talent that Jennings. Come on Blues selectors, time to bite the bullet. As much as I like Matt Cooper as a footballer I’m afraid his time is over. Let’s get Jennings at right side centre and Chris Lawrence at left. Do we want to win SOS this year? If the answers yes, then it’s time to look for some fresh faces in the backline. I’ve got no problem with Hindmarsh, Ryan and Waterhouse et al in the backrow, they’ll give you value for money in defence and will cart the ball up all day but to win we need speed and elusiveness in the backs and the like of Jennings and Lawrence would provide just that.
