State of Origin, I forgot it was on!

119 Have your say
The State of Origin, once the greatest sporting spectacle in Australia, now does little to excite me. I only realised the day of the first State of Origin that the Rugby League showpiece was on.
I remember growing up when there was nothing more important than watching my heroes do NSW proud.
Unfortunately now I see fools, which is unfair to those players that aren’t, but that’s the effect the game is having on me and many others I know.
Origin was the match for all sport lovers, regardless of what code you follow. However, the constant bombardment of disgraceful behavior amongst some NRL players and staff has badly damaged the so called “greatest game of all”.
It’s not just all the scandal. The Super League war played its part in destroying the game.
I believe League has been on the slide down ever since the Super League wars and is only surviving based on their large media contracts.
As a former Rugby League junior, who came close to playing professionally back in the mid 90’s, it saddens me to have lost so much interest in the NRL.
I now get my sporting fix from Football as a big fan of the growing A-League and the Socceroos, where the game is not as simplistic as League and has a global presence that no other sport has.
While I will do my best to watch the Origin series, I hope the likes of Thurston, Inglis, Folau, Bailly, Campese and Jennings can bring back the classic matches that made the event so spectacular.

I hadn’t forgotten it was on, but all I can say is thank god Spicks and Specks and the Chaser is on ABC TV tonight so I have something to watch….unfortunately Origin and RL in general leave a lot to be desired nowadays.

I could not agree more. I used to so look foward to the state of origin, listening to Roy & HG calling the match, well at least the first half. Having SOO parties, it was great, but now, Ohhh that’s right it’s on tonight, yeah I should watch it, but not really excited about it.
Maybe that’s why we send it down to Melbourne, they tend to gravitate towards obscure sport with minimal exposure on the global stage down there.

I must admit, I was a massive fan several years ago, of the game, of the footy show, of the footy show on Sunday, of the roast etc.
Now the scandals have just shat me to tears, and I can’t even be bothered watching the TV at all these days.
I was watching last night, and they had “Origin scandal” as the headline, and it was for Ikin’s dad’s business going under or some such.
It really riles me that stinking bullshit reports like that have just made me sick to death of the game. Everything that TV can do to destroy any fun in the actual game, by sensationalising healdines and stories, they have done.
Thanks a heap bullshit channels.

You can’t blame the game hey Red. Just those who exploit it for their own gain.

There should only be one blockbuster SOO match a year.Just one.
But the ARL play a meaningless extra SOO match even if a series has been decided.
The ARL message? simple really; commercial exploitation is more important than the game.
One match a year is very special. Three matches ,regardless of results, dilutes excellence.
Familiarity breeds contempt ,then contempt becomes yuk. Thats’ the greedy ARL message.

hey onside sounds like you are talking about the tri-nations as well…every week All Blacks v Wallabies.
I’m with you three games really devalue these things…kinda like a one day cricket series you start to forget who won, never mind who played and who tackled.
Money talks I guess

I agree with onside.
I think the time has come where there should be the one blockbuster SOO game.
