Socceroos midfielder Jason Culina wasted no time announcing his arrival as a Gold Coast United player, scoring on debut in a 4-0 friendly win over the Singapore under 23 side on Wednesday.
The former PSV Eindhoven man came off the bench for a 20 minute cameo and delivered a 30 metre drive into the back of the net with two minutes remaining at Hougang Stadium.
The game had been postponed for 24 hours after the team’s private jet was delayed in Port Headland as engineers waited for a maintenance part to be transported from Perth.
United coach Miron Bleiberg paired strikers Shane Smeltz and Joel Porter together for the first time since Porter joined the club from English side Hartlepool.
The combination showed early signs of a promising future as the duo linked well several times to threaten the Singapore goal.
Their bright opening was rewarded in the 27th minute when Porter’s cross was turned into his own net by Abdil Qalyyim, who succumbed to pressure from the lurking Smeltz.
Matt Osman’s free kick was headed home by Michael Thwaite eight minutes later, to make it two goals in two games for the former Melbourne Victory man.
Porter extended Gold Coast’s lead in the 51st minute with a header after lead up work by Porter and Osman.
Culina completed the rout in the 88th minute as his stinging low drive left Singapore keeper Jasper Chan helpless as it flew into the net.
Gold Coast wasted no time after the game, immediately boarding their private jet to Hong Kong ahead of Friday’s clash with Hong Kong FC to complete their two-match tour of Asia.
