Who will be the new saviour for the Blues?

With Queensland having secured a record fourth State of Origin, thoughts must now turn to who should coach the New South Wales Blues for the 2010 State of Origin series.

Even though the NSWRL has said that Craig Bellamy will remain coach for next year’s series, I think the NSWRL has made an error of judgment on this one.

A coach can’t combine both club and representative duties, which is why Queensland are doing so well at this point. Mal Meninga is not tied to a club and is able to focus on Queensland only.

If NSW wants to regain the title of being the number one rugby league State in Australia, it’s obvious to the NSWRL that they have to bite the bullet and go for someone who’s not tied to club duties to be NSW coach.

In my opinion, Steve Mortimer and Phil Gould must put their hands up to take on the role of NSW coach.

Why Turvey and Gus, you might ask?

Both have had success in State of Origin, Mortimer as the skipper of the 1985 NSW team that won its first State of Origin title, while Gould has multiple triumphs as coach of NSW.

And both have some ideas about how to beat Queensland.

Otherwise, if NSW don’t appoint either one of these two Origin legends to be the next coach of NSW, the Queenslanders will continue to rack up title after title after title.

And that can’t be good for the long term future of the State of Origin.
