Springboks coach told to cut out gaffes
Flowery speaking Springboks rugby coach Peter de Villiers has been told to stop making embarrassing statements to the media.
De Villiers landed himself in trouble during the Lions series when he used a black-white mechanic analogy with racial undertones to defend halfback Ricky Januarie’s inclusion in the squad.
He went on to infuriate the Lions by defending [...]

![There’s been much debate on David Gallop’s handling of the Sonny Bill Williams affair. And we hear loud rumblings that rugby league is in poor shape in Australia and that change is needed. So I invited Roar editor, Zolton Zavos, to put his thoughts forward on why he thinks Gus Gould might provide the solution, [...] Steve Kaless: Should Gus Gould replace David Gallop?](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/gus-gould-th.jpg)
![I’m still shaking my head in disbelief at the astonishing attack on Football Federation Australia made in New Zealand’s Sunday Times yesterday. In the article, writer Simon Plumb implores readers not to “hold your breath waiting for an annual Socceroos-All Whites clash – the arrogant Aussies don’t want to know about it.”
“Despite agreeing to a [...] Davidde Corran: Arrogant, irritating Aussies are New Zealand’s best hope](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/new-zealand-all-whites-th.jpg)
![Last week, Cricket Australia issued a brief statement confirming that the chairman of the selection panel for Australia’s national cricket teams, Andrew Hilditch, has been re-appointed for two more years.
This means that Hilditch will preside over the selection policies and processes involved in trying to regain the Ashes in 2010/2011 after a series this year [...] Spiro Zavos: Two more years for chairman Hilditch? Amazing!](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Two-more-years-for-Hilditch.jpg)
![The annual debate on the NAB Cup has surfaced again, but this time it was AFL footy operations manager Adrian Anderson who instigated the discussion by admitting the introduction of more clubs has threatened the competition’s future.
Gold Coast will officially join the AFL in 2011, while the Greater West Sydney club will be added the [...] Ben Somerford: Calls to scrap pre-season competition off the mark](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/bombers-magpies-anzac-chris-bryan-th.jpg)
![My lovely wife, a self-labelled cricket widow (and for another two weeks at least, dear), who doubles as my chief proof-reader, has stated in recent weeks that she was getting a little tired of reading about cricket. I guess that’s fair enough, it has been a long summer.
This meant, as I explained to her at [...] Brett McKay: Super 14 is so much more watchable this season](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/digby-ione-reds-th.jpg)
![In just about any rugby conversation you come across these days, the talk turns to kicking, particularly kicking for goal. “There are too many penalties!” the naysayers argue.
Metronome-boots like Dan Carter and Morne Steyne are apparently spoiling the spectacle. After all, we opine, rugby was meant to be a running game.
This is not entirely [...] Andrew Logan: Limit kicks at goal to just one per player](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/limit-kicking-th.jpg)
![After almost 20,000 fans packed out Christchurch’s AMI Stadium for last weekend’s Wellington-Adelaide clash, many pundits have been asking whether the South Island’s largest city should be a site for future A-League expansion.
Last Saturday’s brilliant crowd turn-out definitely suggests there is an appetite for football in Christchurch, and with a population of just under 400,000 [...] Ben Somerford: Can NZ accommodate a second A-League team?](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/wellington-phoenix-tim-brown-th.jpg)
![It’s a hotly contested Top 5 this week as we take a look at sportspeople who have lost the plot during their careers to such an extent that they’ve landed themselves in jail. There are many unworthy candidates, so I’ve stuck to one per sport. I welcome your additions and suggestions.

![Not since 2005, when the A-League came to life and the Socceroos faced their crucial World Cup qualification playoff, has football in Australia faced as a decisive year as it does in 2010. More important than 2006? Absolutely.
The 2006 World Cup was the icing on the cake of World Cup qualification in 2005.
As long as [...] Adrian Musolino: 2010 critical for perceptions of football in Australia](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/melbourne-heart-th.jpg)
![I’ve been inspired by a brilliant performance by the Wests Tigers on the weekend. Specifically, I have been inspired by a player who, under the common law of sporting cliché, must always be described by the news media as “mercurial” (and duly was, by the Sydney Morning Herald on the front page of Monday’s sports [...] Andrew Jones: Top five sportsmen that must always be described as ‘mercurial’](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/top-five-sportsmen-david-campese-th.jpg)
![On Monday night I took a call from a coach working in Asia asking me where I thought some job opportunities might be coming up in the A-League. He was credentialled, capable and was genuinely interested in checking out what was going on in Australia.
I quickly did some mental maths and the tabulations weren’t encouraging.
Apart [...] Jesse Fink: The A-League needs less stability, more circus](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/john-kosmina-a-league-circus-th.jpg)
![That was one of the most disappointing Socceroos performances in recent memory. Far from being a result we can take some comfort from (in that it’s getting Australia a step closer to South Africa 2010), it’s actually highlighted how dangerous the gambit of what I would call containment is becoming for our national team looking [...] Jesse Fink: Is South Africa 2010 a road to nowhere?](http://www.theroar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/mark-bresciano-soccaroos-th.jpg)

Really embarrassing. You wonder where all the highly paid media gurus were when he first started his rantings? Like most things in SA rugby, this is played out in fron of the world instead of being sorted out discreetly.

Thank god someone said something!!!
I see he denies it and said he will say what he wants to. Its typical of his arrogant nature… Expect more surprise selections and bogus calls, only this time its not a fancied up English team, it’s the All Blacks. This will be a test…
