Sydney FC crushed any chance of a fairytale North Queensland A-League entry with a 3-2 victory in Townsville on Saturday night.

The Fury’s first taste of A-League football looked set to be a memorable one after the home side fought back from a 2-0 deficit and marquee signing and captain Robbie Fowler scored his first league goal.

It wasn’t to be however, with the Sydney club having too much firepower in John Aloisi, who scored a double, and Kofi Danning proving tough to contain up front.

Fury coach Ian Ferguson couldn’t hide his disappointment.

“Heartbreaking is the word mate,” Ferguson said.

“To get it back to 2-2 was a massive bonus for us, you can’t give a team a two-goal start and expect to get something out of the game but I genuinely thought we did.

“I am really pleased with the boys, I thought for an hour or so they put in a fantastic performance.

“Disappointed with the result but upbeat, we are five minutes old (as a club) and going and putting in a performance like that for 60 minutes was very pleasing.”

Sydney FC coach Vitezslav Lavicka was pleased his side were able to get away with victory after the Fury stole the second half momentum.
“We are happy because we expected difficult game, a hard game different from when we played during the pre-season,” Lavicka said, conceding his men were guilty of elementary errors which assisted the Fury’s comeback.

“We made some mistakes after set pieces, their first score was from a corner kick and the second was from a mistake in our box, a penalty kick.”

Aloisi scored in the third 3rd minute from a counter attack and it was 2-0 in the 28th minute after stunning individual effort by young gun Danning, who mesmerised the Fury defence before hitting a superb strike.

The Fury finally gave the crowd of 8,897 something to cheer about when Rostyn Griffiths scored the expansion club’s first ever goal in the 40th minute, heading in a Jason Spagnuolo corner.

North Queensland came out full of fire in the opening stages of the second half, controlling possession and mounting pressure on the Sydney defence finally told when Shannon Cole brought down Spagnuolo in the box.

Fury captain Fowler stepped up for the penalty and levelled the scores 2-2 to marking his arrival in the tropics.

Sydney forward Aloisi bagged his second goal in the 72nd minute to take back the lead, calmly potting a penalty kick from right in front after Alex Brosque was brought down by Fury keeper Paul Henderson.
