Let’s have more action, less talk about crowds

After four seasons of wondering whether the novelty of the A-League would wear off, the time has come to rid us fans of the manic and depressive crowd count that follows every round of the A-League.
For so many column inches to be devoted to the subject, as a fan, it’s getting quite boring. I’m sure the FFA and the A-League clubs have someone that is paid to keep an eye on the crowds.
Why not interview players or fans and ask them what they thought of the first round A League action?
Here is a behind the scenes look at the crowd counting that occurred after the first round.
Dear Melbourne Victory, what did you think of the crowd figures? Where you disappointed?
Yes
Would you have liked more people to come?
Yes
Are you working hard to get a bigger crowd next home game?
Yes.
Did having the opening game on a Thursday night affect the crowd?
Yes
Dear FFA, was moving the Brisbane Roar-Gold Coast United game a mistake considering the crowd was less than expected?
Yes
With the benefit of hindsight, perhaps having the fixture played at the Gold Coast would have been better?
Yes
Riveting stuff, isn’t it? I just can’t get enough of listening to club administrators.
The Russian Premier League (RPL) is ranked sixth in UEFA’s rankings, higher than the silky Dutch and pretty boy Portuguese leagues.
I covered Russian football for the first half of the 2009 season for Goal.com and I noticed the A-League crowd numbers didn’t look so bad in comparison.
During Matchday Two of the RPL, Dynamo Moscow, the club Socceroo Luke Wilkshire plays for, got 10.523 against FC Khimki. Matchday three saw FC Khimki get as low as 3,000 for a home game.
Matchday Four saw the biggest derby in Russian football feature CSKA Moscow Vs Lokomotiv and the crowd was a disappointing 20,000.
Perhaps the crowd figures where affected by the cold weather and the ice hockey?
So I looked at the figures when the weather in Russia got warmer, and after the summer break on Matchday 12, Rubin Kazan, the current RPL leaders and champions, played FC Rostov. The crowd was a paltry 15,000.
Another Moscow derby was played during Match Day 12 and in that game FC Moscow and CSKA Moscow had only a paltry 12,000 people watch them.
Am I boring you yet? I know I’m boring myself.
Bring on round two of the A League for the real action, the stuff that happens on the park, and leave the bean counting for the others.

I have always believed with it’s younger audience that Football i.e. A-League / Socceroos would end up on Ch 10.

I was one who obssessed about the crowd figures for the last few years. I used to get angry when Sydney FC wouldn’t get a good crowd. I would follow other games for the crowd figure as much as the Score. I so wanted the A-League to succeed.
Now I just accept that the A-league is here to stay & that the game is like a runaway train in this country, the media is slowly getting behind it. I have noticed some changes, especially locally (radio), where FM stations are getting behind the HAL, one of the stations sport report on Saturday comprised firstly of Friday night’s RL match, the Ashes & then the HAL between MV & CCM, no mention at all of the AFL scores. In the sports programme on 2UE where the hosts are both ex RL int’ls who refuse to call it football, are now still calling the game Soccer , but notice that at times the word football comes out quite regularly. Back page of the Sunday Herald was our Johnny, first time I remember football (local version) on the backpage that did not involve a crowd riot.
If Sydney can average around 15k to 18K & get big crowds for the MV, Nth Q (fowler factor) GC etc I will be more than happy. We CANNOT even come close to comparing ourselves to the AFL crowds. But if we don’t bad luck, I will still enjoy myself being a season ticket holder.

Ok folks, let’s leave the crowd bull shit behind.
Here are two of the best plays of the weekend – occurred within a few minutes of each other at the Jets game:
Fast forward to around 6:30.
First up we see Vignaroli and Lube tidying up deep in defence, no panic stations, Lube sees there ain’t much happening so he decides to hot foot it, Vignaroli holds onto it, and then puts in the through ball, Lube takes it nicely, what’s that? a bit of a dummy and change of pace from the big man??!! finds a metre and puts in a beautiful cross – Hoffman will never again get a better opportunity than that to score a hatrick (but makes a mess of it).
Next play, chip over the defence has Rooney running on to it, no space to speak of but lofts an inch perfect flighted chip with Naidovski smack bang in the middle of two defenders for a very neat headed finish.
Game over, three points in the bag – and thank your mother for the rabbits!!
Brought to you by Pippinu’s Play of the Day!! (u jocu da jurnata)

Mid
don’t worry.
Just as I’m starting my very own Pippinu’s Play of the Day!! (u jocu da jurnata)
I had already decided to create a second category: Arsey goals (riti culuti). At the end of the season, we can all vote on the weekly selections (if I can remember to keep them together).
Now this is the incredible thing – not only do CCM have two selections this week in the Arsey goals category – they might take one and two at the end of the year!! What are the chances??!!
Fortunately, I’ve got both here for all to see on the one clip, just to make things easier for everyone:
This is what we should focus on:
1. Simon’s incredible shank that actually allows the ball to just get in under the bar
2. McLinchey’s poor long range effort, that was going to miss the target by 20 m before Roddy got his foot in the way.

My new mantra for the A-League is “BRING A MATE”. Instead of moaning about crowd numbers, bring a mate along to the next home game. Offer to pay his ticket and say “If you like it, you shout me next time.”
Alternatively: “I’ll pay the tickets, you shout the beers and food.” Could work out cheaper!! LOL

Need more talk of this.
If we all agree that the aleague is decent but with room for improvement, maybe we should all be doing our bit ‘out in the field’ and rallying in more people to check out the games

hate when ppl sook about attendances. did we ever consider how many of us a dual sports fans and that footballs season start coincides with the business crowd pulling end of afl and nrl. crowds usually go up around midway which we all know they will anyway so why sook for. melbourne had 18k because its on a thursday and because all the magpies and blues supporters would have been at the footy (yes i know alot of them that are victory fans). the thing thats sh!ts me the most is that most of my friends dont even follow footy they onlyfollow football but have no clue about victory, thats a fta issue which will be resolved later.

how about less sooking and more talk about how the standard should improve. so far ive watched 7 games this week including the socceroos (which was an absolute crakcer goooooooooooo aussie), all of them were really entertaining and i loved except for mvfc v ccm and ccm v nj they just did my head in. ccm really need a new coach, seriously you cant keep playing that long ball crap its just painful. mvfc should get a better coach too, merrick has absolutely no idea what to do as soon as archie or muscat are out and wewill probably get dropped tonight
