The 1984 State of Origin game between South Australia and Victoria at Adelaide’s Football Park is regarded (along with the 1986 WA-Vic epic at Subiaco) as one of the greatest games, not just in State of Origin, but Australian Football history.

It was a history-making match, being the first game to be played under the new lights at Football Park.

A wealth of football talent was there: for South Australia, Michael Aish, Neil Craig, Stephen Kernahan, Greg Phillips, Mark Williams, Garry McIntosh, and John Platten. For Victoria, Paul Salmon, Garry Wilson, Peter Daicos, Wayne Johnston, and Tim Watson.

In the end, Victoria got up by four points in a nail-biter, with the scores close all night.

But it was the performance of Stephen Kernahan that grabbed the headlines.

Kernahan kicked ten and almost won the game for South Australia. It gave Carlton supporters watching the game an indication of what was to come.
