On Saturday evening in New South Wales’ Warners Bay, the top four teams in the Australian Ice Hockey League will play their part in two semi finals to determine who gets to play for the title of national champions and the shiny new AIHL Champions Trophy.
Finishing the season in first place, the Newcastle North Stars will defend their 2008 title versus the Gold Coast Blue Tongues, finals debutants at 7.30pm AEST. In the earlier game, second-placed Melbourne Ice continue to give themselves every opportunity to win glory, while the new Adelaide Adrenaline hope to regain the magic of their predecessor team, the Adelaide Avalanche.
The AIHL Finals have secured a major sponsor in 2009 in VIP, and through this their widest ever distribution. Games will be broadcast live over the Internet, as well being broadcast on community TV channels in Adelaide and Brisbane, and finally on Fox Sports.
The winners, therefore, can claim their stake in ice hockey history.
For the first time in the history of the AIHL Finals, there is only one team from NSW, and no teams from Sydney. The diversity however is a fantastic opportunity for the league to capture a wider audience, with a large portion of the continent having something to cheer for.
The veteran teams are quietly confident, while the new teams are brash and voiciferous.
On Sunday night we’ll know the truth, but Sun Tzu can put the last word in for now: “Victory in war is apparent to all, but the science of ensuring victory is a mysterious secret, generally unknown”.
